Taking a creative risk can be the most challenging risk. The uncertainty around the outcome of something that often takes a lot of time and materials – what if I don’t like it? what if it’s awful? what if it is amazing? All valid questions, but if we set aside the judgment of self, and just explore the risk will more than likely pay off big time!

Creative Affirmation

I learn and grow when I take creative risks.

The quilt in my images was born out of my own creative risk. I was not comfortable working in improv, the options were many and overwhelming to me. So I challenged myself to explore it daily for a couple of months. Setting myself up with some parameters and avenues to explore, allowed me to create and enjoy the process.

Through improv piecing, I found so much joy in sewing again. I often work on deadlines and have little time to slow down and enjoy the process. However, with improv piecing, I slow down and take stock throughout the process. The risk paid off big when I put the pieces together and simply enjoyed the process.

My advice to you, is to try something new – your own color palette, switch the color placements, or leave the ruler off the mat and see what improv piecing you might explore. If your creative mojo feels a little “blah” a creative risk might be ust what you need to wake it up.
