When given the choice to follow a creative inclination, or ignore it, I always follow. It can be as simple as a quick note to self, or a full-day tangent. Recognizing these inclinations and observing where they take me creatively is rewarding and fun. Learning to see them can be challenging if we go too fast about our daily lives, I’ve included a few ways to slow down and recognize your creative inclinations.

Creative Affirmation: I follow my creative inclinations.

Creative Affirmation

I follow my creative inclinations.

When I observe that my creative inclinations aren’t as strong as I would like them to be, I like to start with small steps toward my goal. Like many things in life small changes over time create the biggest changes.

  • Set aside 10 minutes daily to peruse a creative visual feast. For example, Pinterest or Instagram, without judgment, look for patterns in my likes or dislikes. When I notice a pattern, it usually comes in the form of colors or shapes that I’m drawn to. This can be very subtle at first and grow more obvious as you practice.

Or

  • Set aside 10 minutes to rearrange piles of fabric in my stash. The act of touching fabric, and combining different colors together can be very therapeutic and bring about new ideas.

From here it’s just a matter of listening in and following the subtle inclinations that come up for you. It is important to let go of judgment entirely. That voice in your head that says – boring, that’s been done before, or so many log cabin quilts out there, how will this one be different? The creative journey is just that, a journey, and by following one inclination you will find another, and another as you create and grow.

Creative Affirmation: I follow my creative inclinations.

Don’t stop creating, or following your creative inclinations. What will you make today?
