As promised, I’m back with a finished block! The Heartland Heritage January block is called Wildflower. Wildflower is one of my favorite blocks in the quilt too!

Heartland Heritage - Wildflower Block

It’s worth repeating that the Heartland Heritage desk calendar has the pattern included. Each month you turn the calendar around to get busy at your sewing machine! I love that the calendar stands up, it’s easy to read, and doesn’t get buried under the fabric piles. (honesty counts!)

Being grey outside this week, it was really fun to pull my bright Wanderlust fabrics out! They are so cheery to sew with. I wanted to take a few minutes here to point out that the pattern includes pressing directions, and if followed the seams will nest easily.

Let’s take a closer look:

On the left is the point unit, and the right is the HST units for the corners. It looks like everything is press in the same direction, but they nest – I promise!

With the corner units sewn up, they nest so nicely. Add a pin in the center, and each edge, before stitching it in place. When possible, I like to sew with the HST up, so that I can see where it the seams intersect.

So often, we just show the pretty finish. I think all those perfectly pressed seams are pretty too! Here’s a closer look at the corner.

And just in case you think I always sew everything perfectly, here’s the proof that I don’t:

All four of my corners had to be restitched! It always safer to lay out all the pieces before stitching. Make it match the diagram, then work smallest to biggest.
