Letting go and drawing outside the lines is fun in practice, but can also be a big mental hurdle too! Encouraging yourself to release perfection, and see where inspiration takes you is a great starting point for any project. My project, included in the images – Until Next Time – is exactly this. I had a collection of fabrics in a box to use, inspiration in a class with Sherri Lynn Wood and about 24 hours of sewing time. I snipped and sewed, making quick decisions and let the imperfections be. It was so much FUN!

Creative Affirmation

Sometimes I draw outside the lines.

Letting go of the rules or “lines” and enjoying the sewing time is always theraputic to me. I love relaxing with a project that is not for anyone, or attached to a deadline. These projects let me enjoy the process, without the rush to finish. After I finished the quilt top for this quilt, I waited about six months to quilt and bind it.

The curved corner is a nod to the curves in the quilt top. One curve felt like enough, and the corner with the plus shapes was it! When I’m sewing with improv, I think of it more as a conversation that I’m having with the fabrics and shapes. Less regimented, more playful – FUN!

No matter how much you enjoy sewing, sometimes it’s just as important to draw outside the lines and be free. I have found so much joy in releasing that perfectionism and sewing just for me.
