Making a quilt a second time is a fun adventure, and Dayhike is the perfect companion! This pattern is designed for a Layer Cake plus a little bit of solid or contrasting fabric. It’s name came with my fourth fabric line with Moda, and simple construction, that offers a quick finish. Not all quilts need to be quick and simple, but having a tried and true favorite to fall back on for a quick gift or comfort quilt is handy at times.

This quilt lends itself to a variety of fabric styles! Working with a Layer Cake offers a quick start since there are less decisions to make. This throw size quilt is made with all 42 pieces of a Layer Cake. The pattern includes the option for a smaller quilt, and a larger quilt using two Layer Cakes. The bars added can be all one color, or mixed up like I did here. I love the way the bits of solid fabric stand out and pull your eye around the quilt top.

Deciding on the thread color for quilting turned into a big decision. I usually find two to three thread options that work well on a quilt top. This one has so much color that any of these options would have worked well. In the end I went with the Marigold color on top – it’s amazing what can become a neutral in thread choices.

To quilt it I added more flowers with the Fun Flowers design by Dastardly Line – it stitched out beautifully, and I love the texture it added. I’m trying to decide which quilt will have this design next!

When I bought the Layer Cake, I didn’t realize that there was a gorgeous wide-back to match. It fits the bright and cheery quilt perfectly and is an easy win for loading it on the long arm quickly.

Dayhike is also perfect for beginner quilters, simple construction, and precut fabric eliminate a lot of decisions and you can enjoy the process fully! If you haven’t yet, you can pick up Dayhike in my shop. It’s available in a printed booklet and PDF for instant gratification.

I hope you enjoy the project as much as I have making it!
