Moving from Southern California to Utah after college, was good but hard too. My husband and I had decided that raising a family in Southern California wasn’t for us and we loved our new small town. Honestly, I think I was in shock for the first six months and wouldn’t have survived without the 24-hour grocery store a half-mile away from our home.

My Journey into Quilting

I learned to sew garments as a girl, and I had been teaching myself to piece quilts already. Using mixed charm packs I had found on eBay and random bits of fabric leftover from clothing projects. A few years later I found designer fabrics while visiting a local quilt shop and fell into a rabbit hole of quilting soon after when I unearthed quilting blogs online.

It wasn’t until I found the local quilt guild that I finally found a community of friends that “got” me and my need to cut up fabric and sew it back together. It was here that I found my community and found that I had friends when I went into a school or even at the grocery store. That hadn’t happened before! Being a young stay-at-home mom the circle of quilters was a fantastic source of fellowship and inspiration.

Fast forward a few (ahem) years, my kids are all teenagers, and until COVID shut down normal activities, we were busy with all the sports and band activities that come with school. I still try to attend my local guild when I can, but honestly, the meeting time doesn’t always work with my schedule. My community has changed, but I’m adapting!
