I have made many quilts over the years, but very few have been remade. Quill is a quilt design that I first made in 2014 as a pattern for the Quilty magazine. It has all of my favorite things, over-sized blocks, simplicity, and negative space too!

The large feather blocks are made with half-square triangle units, and there are just three blocks in the throw size. When I independently released the pattern I added a queen size quilt that requires eight feather blocks, and still includes negative space. Using Grunge fabrics the quilt has more depth than it would have if just using solids.

As I was deciding on quilting, the interlocking shapes won out. I love how the circles add another layer of dimension without taking away from the piecing detail. Of course, the texture is so nice too! I chose a soft aqua thread for quilting, knowing that it would blend better over the colorful feather shapes.

The original quilt was made with my first fabric collection for Moda Fabrics – Modern Neutrals. The resulting quilt is very soothing, and while the fabrics are not available, the colors could be used as inspiration for your Quill quilt. Quilting this version, I used rulers to outline the feather shapes. Then added randomly spaced lines across the negative space.

My Quill quilt is one of a few that I’ve finished in the midst of coronavirus quarantine, I’ve found it helpful to focus on a project I can finish, instead of worrying about all the things I can’t change. Pick up a paper or PDF pattern in my shop, and start your Quill quilt today!

Have you been quilting lately?
