A Thread of Sky by Deanna Fei is a complex and well crafted novel, that I enjoyed reading!
From the publisher:
When her husband of thirty years is killed in a devastating accident, Irene Shen and her three daughters are set adrift. Nora, the eldest, retreats into her high-powered New York job and a troubled relationship. Kay, the headstrong middle child, escapes to China to learn the language and heritage of her parents. Sophie, the sensitive and artistic youngest, is trapped at home until college, increasingly estranged from her family-and herself. Terrified of being left alone with her grief, Irene plans a tour of mainland China’s must sees, reuniting three generations of women-her three daughters, her distant poet sister, and her formidable eighty-year-old mother-in a desperate attempt to heal her fractured family.
If only it was so easy. Each woman arrives bearing secrets big and small, and as they travel-visiting untouched sections of the Great Wall and the seedy bars of Shanghai, the beautiful ancient temples and cold, modern shopping emporiums-they begin to wonder if they will ever find the China they seek, the one their family fled long ago.
Over days and miles they slowly find their way toward a new understanding of themselves, of one another, and of the vast complexity of their homeland, only to have their new bonds tested as never before when the darkest, most carefully guarded secret of all tumbles to the surface and threatens to tear their family apart forever. A Thread of Sky is a beautifully written and deeply haunting story about love and sacrifice, history and memory, sisterhood and motherhood, and the connections that endure.
The story meanders around the must see sites in China, as the women tour China.  In an effort to not be perceived as weak,  each of the women is dealing with her own secrets, which causes them to be distant and cold toward each other.  Over the course of the two week trip, little bits are revealed, and finally all the secrets are made known.  With this new transparency of each woman, they are able to find common ground and consider meaningful connections with one another.
The writing focuses on each of the women individually, and their emotions as they interact with each other and their surroundings in China. Â I enjoyed the writing! Â It gave me a good deal of insight into each of the characters, and pulled me into the story with them. Â I would recommend this book to anyone, it’s well written and an enjoyable read!

Sounds like a good book! Would love to win a copy.
When my Great Grandfather immigrated to America from Then Bohemia, he kept a diary of the places he went through, what was growing, and the cost of beer etc. One summer our family decided to follow his trip to America, starting in Japan by ship to then USSR, by train on the trans-siberian rr, then starting in Praha again by train going ever west through NY and to Minnesota. My six kids are all good travelers and great company and my husband could be a tour guide he is so good at planning. It was a vacation to remember!
I don’t know how you find time to read AND quilt. Right now, my reading is minimal but this story sounds engaging.
My favorite family vacations are ones where we can all be together with outside time. I like some outdoor activities mixed with some educational ones. We have just discovered geocaching so that adds intrigue to any destination.
Not having unlimited resources, we use our vacation times to travel overseas to visit with family. It’s always fun! Last time I won a novel in a giveaway, I passed in on with another giveaway. I decided that I will do that next time, too, so please pick me, Amy!
This sounds a great book!
We have holidayed in Ireland for over 20 years – we rent a cottage on an island and the children fish and swim and kayak while DH and I walk
My favorite vacation was taking our 3 kids to Disneyworld and watching their face light up at everything!
Growing up we would go to Yellowstone every year. I have carried this tradition on to my family. It just isn’t summer if we don’t go to Yellowstone.
My favorite family vacation would be one that someone else paid for.
Sounds like an interesting read. My favorite vacation wasn’t with my family but a group of women during college. We spent Spring break in Cairo. It was a little crazy, we had to go to the ER twice and staid in a really sketchy hotel, but we loved it so much it was worth it!
We had a great holiday this Christmas in Vermont, where we learnt to snowboard, ate good food and had a few glasses of wine. Lovely! Thanks for the chance to win this book.
Favorite family vacations happen every time my family gets together!
Honestly my favorite family vacation happened this past year in October, it was our first “real” vacation just as a family of three. My son was almost 3 years old, and we went to the beach and had a wonderful trip, the hotel and trip were great, and it really was a special bonding experience for the three of us as a family!
Sounds like a great book. My favorite family vacation was taken in 1976. (Yes, I typed that right! :)) I was in junior high and we went to Yellowstone National park. We drove there from Missouri and took my cousin with us. Such a fun trip!
My favorite family vacation was a trip to Michigan–camping with the kids at Hofmaster State Park. When the ads say “Pure Michigan” they are talking about the pure clean Lake Michigan waters and beautiful sand beaches in Western Michigan. We all love it!
I really enjoy reading books with well built characters. My favorite trip was a camping/road trip that included Yellowstone Nat’l Park, the Flaming Gorge, Utah’s Devil’s Playground, Colorado’s Dinosaur Nat’l Monument and other awesome sites in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. Two weeks of beauty!!
My favorite vacation is my one-on-one time with my 5-year old granddaughter. Her Mom works a lot of hours at her job, and my granddaughter spends a lot of time stuck in the house with her great-grandmother (who is partially bedridden). So when I have vacation time with my granddaughter I pick my brain (and the brains of all my co-workers) to find activities that will keep her entertained while she’s with me. No more being stuck inside for my little sweetheart! And also, I love to read and would love to win this book. Thanks for the opportunity.
It does sound like a good book. Enter me in!
My favorite family vacation was when my parents came out to WA state to where I lived and we toured the mountains and cities together. Lots of fun. Although I also enjoyed the time I drove my grandma across country… even though it was stressful I love being with my grandmother.
My favourite family holiday was a week on the Whitsunday Coast of Qld Australia. My best friend was getting married and all my family where invited so hubby & I hired a house with my mum, dad & kid brother & my sister & her hubby came too. It was stunningly beautiful, we bush walked, shopped, ate out, took a sunset cruise and enjoyed a wonderful wedding.
I recommend it especcially now when Queensland really needs tourists. There are some amazing deals going if any of your readers need a holiday.
I can imagine traveling with my own family and trying to keep secrets from each other would be rather complicated. :)
This sounds like a book that would be great for a book club to discuss – what do you think?
sounds like a great read ~ thanks for the chance!!
agh ~ so sorry; I was in such a hurry to get my name in the hat, I didn’t add my fav vacation….
That would be a trip we took to St Louis several years ago ~ we had ordered travel guides a few months before the trip, so we spent a lot of time planning (which was almost as fun as the trip) We’d saved up plenty of money, so we didn’t feel like we had to be cheap all the time, plus we got a fabulous price on our hotel. The kids were at great ages and were all SO well behaved. wonderful memories
Would love to win a copy. sounds like a great read ~ thanks for the chance!! ) I was in junior high and we went to Yellowstone National park.
