I have a quick finish to share with you today!
Nancy Zieman’s new book – Quick Column Quilts is full of beautiful and useful patterns for any quilter!
This table runner is based off of the Quilt to Give pattern in chapter 13 – I’ve admired this quilt, for a while now, and knew it was the quilt that I wanted to stitch up! I have been stitching from my scrap box lately, and knew that I wanted to make a more masculine table runner for our dining table in my Modern Neutral fabrics. Sometimes it’s a little odd to celebrate my husband or son’s birthday with a floral runner on the table, and this will be the perfect solution.
While there’s lots of instruction for cutting from yardage, I had a blast pulling scraps from my bin and pairing them up! Since I just had one color of sashing, I opted to have one strip between each pieced row.
Quick Column Quilts is a great addition to any quilting library, with 13 great patterns, Nancy has also added in her tips for making quilts, the tools we use, and she takes the time to explain why we use them! It’s beautifully put together, with stunning examples of each quilt to inspire you too! I highly encourage you to seek out this book, for yourself, or a friend that is ready to learn more about quilting.
I have one copy of Quick Column Quilts to giveaway, but go visit Nancy’s blog here and leave a comment to be entered to win a number of fantastic prizes, including a Baby Lock Tempo sewing machine, and a Nancy’s Notions gift certificate!
*To win a copy of Quick Column Quilts, leave me a comment, telling me when you like to sew, over the course of a day, or week.
I’ll announce a winner Monday, September 22, 2014 – Good Luck!

since being retired, I love to sew in the afternoons while catching up on tv shows that I was too tired to stay awake for the night before. I only sew on Mon-Fri. I don’t sew on the weekends, probably cause I like some kind of a schedule from my years of working.
I like to sew during the day, mostly during my littles’ naptimes :)
Whenever I get the chance :). It works out to mostly on the weekends, and usually starting in the afternoon since I don’t tend to rush on weekend mornings.
I never have a schedule, but I usually do a little sewing every day.
This looks like such a great book and I love Nancy! I try to sew a bit every day, but on my days off from work I get several hours of time to sew.
I usually sew on the weekend
I sew on and off before 5pm, Monday thru Friday. The rest of my time is spent doing housework, helping with grandchildren, oh, and spending time with my husband.
I love to see anytime!
I like to sew all the time! Usually I make myself finish the “chores” I have to do for the day first, otherwise I’ll get so involved in sewing that there may be no dinner, or clean clothes, or that sort of thing.
I mostly only have time on the weekends but I try to sneak in an evening here and there.
I like to sew in the morning or at night… mostly because I love to have my machine set up in front of the window, but the aftnoon sun is sooooo bright!! 8)
I try to sew a little everyday and whenever I have any extra time.
I like to sew whenever I can fit it in. I usually prefer to sew during the day but I sometimes sew in the evening if I’m not too tired.
A bad day at sewing is better than no sewing at all. I love sewing any time of the day or night . . .many projects accomplished in the wee hours of the morning. Your new book looks sew fun!! Great ideas!! Thanks, Nancy!!
I sew during the kids’ naptime, after their bedtime, or sometimes while they watch tv. It’s all basically when i can fit it in!
I’m mostly retired so I sew during the day, usually for 3-4 hours daily. I know I’m lucky! The book looks awesome. Thanks for the giveaway.
I work full-time, so my sewing time is in the evenings and on weekends. And since I don’t have any kids at home, I can sew pretty much whenever I want. :) Love your table runner!
I love the look of your table runner with the solid gray offsetting the prints. I might have to steal the idea and make a quilt for my brother. I’m retired so can sew anytime I feel like it but my favorite time of day is late afternoon into the wee hours of the morning. Guess I’m a night owl.
I’d love to sew 8-5 every day! But since that’s not possible, mornings are my preferred time. The brain is fresh with ideas then! Love your masculine runner – perfect!
Mornings definitely. As the old proverb says “she who sews at night rips in the daytime!”
Just learning right now but enjoying the process and like sewing in the daytime when the light is best and I can see what I’m doing! I hate ripping out stitches!
I find myself sewing sometime between 11 and 5. I like to sew in the morning but there are always odds and ends to get finished before I can sit down at my machine. I can get a lot done between 3 and 5 until I have to break to make supper. I used to sew late into the night but that doesn’t work for me anymore. When I have a deadline, I can get up early and sew great before breakfast. Thanks.
I like to sew 9:30-3:00 (roughly) that is, when I’m not at an exercise class, volunteer group meetings …. I especially love “sew days” with friends.
I love to sew on rainy days but living in Arizona I don’t get many of those! So mornings and early afternoons are when I get most of my sewing done. Love the Column Quilts!
I am retired so I get to sew when I want. Right now I have been getting ready for a retreat so have been cutting projects, pinning tops to fmq, and really not touching the sewing machine. But, I leave this morning for many days of sewing with friends.
The question would better be answered “when do I NOT want to sew!” If I had my druthers, I would sew 24 hours a day. Realistically, though, I tend to sew in the evenings to wind down from busy days. There’s nothing more calming and therapeutic than the sound of a sewing machine.
I like to sew whenever I can squeeze it in, sometimes in the afternoon for a few minutes after work, or on weekends. My favorite time to sew is the second and fourth Monday of every month with my sewing group!!
Since I work full-time, I tend to see on Saturdays. But now I am an empty nester so perhaps there will be more time?!?
Most of my sewing time is on the weekend. I love the quilting on your table runner.
I work days, so when I can I try to squeeze in some sewing in the evening.
What a fun quick quilt, I’d love to see more.
I like to sew early in the day the best. The light is best and then if I get something done by the afternoon I can photograph it and then put my feet up for the evening.
Now that I am retired, I try to fit some sewing time in every day. It might be at my sewing machine in the afternoon or hand sewing at night with my husband by the TV. But, it is not as easy as you might think. It seems that when you are retired, you are just as busy if not more so. Thanks for the chance to win
In a perfect world, I would sew everyday! I usually sew by machine or do my cutting, etc., during the day, but I always have some type of hand work to do in the evening while “listening” to TV.
When I worked I sewed at night, sometimes all night, but now that I am retired I sew late mornings and late afternoons. Other time is spent thinking about what I will do, what the next step is in what I making.
Evenings are my time…no other time calls to me…unless I’m finishing a gift or commission. Must admit I’ve done more quilting THIS summer than any one before-not sure why. But have had the most productive summer ever!
Amy, thanks for being part of the Quick Column Quilts Blog Tour. Thanks for showing one of the quilt designs scaled downed to be a table runner!
Nancy
I sew as often as I can, although sewing is shared with my other crafty pursuits.
Oh, I love your color choices for your runner! I’m planning a quilt for one of my sons… I think those colors, in Nancy’s column design would be perfect!
I sew whenever I can sneak some time in (it’s my fiber therapy!)… Usually every day, in odd moments throughout the day… (If it’s been a too-busy day, I need to spend some time with sewing before I go to bed, even if it’s only to “play” with fabrics, planning and thinking about projects!)
Thank you!

Oh wow! Looks like a great book. I like to sew in the mornings on my days off. Thanks!
First, I love your quilt and colors you chose. I agree, flowery isn’t a good choice for my hubby’s birthday. :-)
I like to sew of a morning and into the afternoon. After dinner I get my house in order for the next day. Sewing is the best therapy and makes my heart happy. It has helped tremendously coping and recovering from bilateral mastectomy this past April.
I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog and wouldn’t have known about you if not for the book tour.
I like to sew in the late evenings. I’m a night owl, but most of the time I’m sewing in the afternoon while my hubby is at work…mornings are for house chores!
HI, I like to sew/quilt in the mornings and sometimes during evening tv watching.
Thanks for a neat giveaway!
I like to sew as much as I can, in the evenings after work, and as much as possible in the weekends.
My copy of the book is in the mail. Can’t wait to start sewing the chimes quilt!
I am a beginning quilter and I really love to sew in the morning when the light is best and I can focus best. I tend to do some sewing on a project every day, even if it is just a small task. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I finish a project. Love your table runner!
Like to sew whenever I get a bit of time…lately has been in the evenings. Working on Christmas projects..so squeezing sewing moments every bit I can! Lol
Love the Tablerunner you made! Would love these fabriocs for a quilt for our son’s Home
I like to cut, measure, pin in the AM, then Iron & sew at night in front of the TV.. but if the mood strikes me you can dins me doing anything sewing related at any time of the day.. my boss (the dog) allows me a certain amount of freedom like that!
I make big quilts, lap size quilts and small wallhangings. I like to cut up scraps for 2 1/2 strips and different sizes of squares and rectangles, then I press them and put them in containers.
I have always wanted to quilt. When I saw nancy on PBS i found a solution to easy quilting. Thanks to Nancy Zeiman I have made 14 column quilts in a very short amount of time. Hopefully I will find some extra time to try the table runner.
I would love to sew every day, but these days I am lucky if I get to the machine once a week! I prefer sewing during the day when the light is good.
I enjoy sewing as it allows me to express myself. When I sew (especially quilt) projects for others it helps me let them know I love them even while away and that I want to give them something special. If I sew for myself, it helps me say what colors and styles I like. My best work is done after household necessities are completed and I can focus uninhibited by “must do’s: My favorite work is done at night while my hubby, dog & I relax together in the living room usually embroidery or bindings.
I love sewing and try to get some time in doing so everyday. I love looking at new fabric and really just touching the fabric and imagining.
I’m retired and have a whole room for my sewing so I can go there whenever the mood takes over. I love all of my machines and all the inspiration I can get over the internet. Nancy is one of the greats.
I love to sew on evenings!
I don’t have a schedule but I try to sew every day.
I sew during daylite hours, 7 days a week
Believe it or not I like to in the wee hours of the morning from like 3 am to 7 or8 am. It is so peaceful that time of the morning.
I like to sew in the morning after I have taken my daughter to school on days I don’t work. The house is quiet and I can concentrate for an hour or two before I start thinking about what to fix for dinner and house cleaning and grocery shopping!
I like to sew early in the morning – often before everyone else is up!!
I think it would be more likely to find a time when I didn’t like to sew! My only down time is when I am tired. I will push on but that is when I make mistakes. My favorite time used to be early morning but now my household is quieter and early evening has become a special time. Dinner done, kitchen clean and the evening stretches out like a sunny day in Summer.
Any time of day is a good time for me to be in the mood to sew. Weekends can be tough for me to sew because I so want to be out in the world sharing something wonderful with my family or friends.
I like to sew in the afternoons, especially in the summer when it is too hot to be outside at that time.
I love to sew when the mood strikes then I sew about 6 hours a day until the project is done.
I don’t sew enough but I am retiring soon and quess what that means all day if I want!
Thanks for the chance to win!
Love your quilting! I like to sew on weekends and late nights. Thanks!
Every afternoon
I try to do a little sewing every afternoon and for most of the day on Saturdays.
I like to sew during the day as the light is very bright in the sewing room and as many days as possible.
I like to sew most any time except first thing in the morning. Late morning is great, mid-afternoon while listening to baseball is a favorite time, and in the evening I sometimes get a burst of enthusiasm and decide to start something or finish up something else.
I like to sew in the afternoon after chores and errands have been completed.
I usually sew after my “chores” are done, which usually puts it into the afternoon. I will often go back in the evening if I’m not too tired!
I usually get to quilt on the weekends, when DH is not working from my sewing area! He’s cramping my style! LOL
Normally I’d do a little in the morning, a little in the afternoon and if I’m trying to get something done, some in the evening too, but not every day.
I’m retired so I set my own sewing hours. For me that is the morning. Pretty much every day.
I like to sew in the afternoon when the light is really good in my house.
I love to sew whenever I get a chance, usually in the morning or late afternoon. I can’t compete with you late night owls any more!
I love sewing all day on the weekend.!
I sew in the afternoon on weekdays, while my three little monkeys are at school!
allisonpogany@gmail.com
I usually sew during nap time. As much as I hate when my husband travels, I secretly love that it gives me the chance to stay up late and sew, guilt free.
I love to sew in the evenings, and on the weekends. Thanks for the chance.
I love to sew in the afternoon, and often keep going till 6 pm or later. Recently I have also been hand sewing in the evenings while watching tv – either adding to my hexagon collection, or hand sewing binding on a quilt.
I work retail with a fluctuating schedule so any day I have off is a good day to sew!
I like sewing on Sunday afternoons which is very relaxing with a household of 2 boys. It also starts my creativity before a busy week. Thanks so much
Hi there! I have five sons, so I know how you feel…need some boy stuff sometimes. I love your use of grey and those wavy lines. I like to sew all the time, but as I am raising my two grandgirls (2 & 5), I find that daytime is best. Mornings seem to work even though I am not a morning person, and by night (when I used to sew) I am just too tired…imagine that! Thanks for this chance.
I knew I was in love with sewing in the 9th grade home ec class. Started sewing then and haven’t really ever stopped and that’s been a number of years.
For me the best (and only possible) moment is after dinner, while watching tv with my man.
Thanks!!
I have to have a good health day to sew, normally it’s a couple of afternoons a week.
I love modern quilts and this book looks really good. I sew some every afternoon, sometimes on my fiber art and sometimes quilting. I also go to guild sewing days and retreats where I always have a quilt on the go.
I have 2 littles at home (most of the time) and sometimes they allow me to sew a few minutes (they love to watch me press the “gas pedal”), but usually I sew during naps or after they are in bed (that way I can concentrate on what I’m doing!). Thanks for the chance to win- love the projects in this book (I’m all about quick!).
I am not a morning person so I usually sew after supper. Wish I liked to get up early, I think I could get more done.
I usually work in the daytime; I find it easier if I can find any sunshine to see by! But of course if needed sewing is done at all hours…….
I like to sew at night when my husband and son have gone to bed. I like the quiet and I don’t feel like my sewing is taking me away from family time.
I like to sew in the dead of night, when the house is quiet and there are no interruptions. Plus, I get to watch the sun coming up over the river near our house.
I sew mostly in the afternoon. Mornings I do my errands and chores so I can enjoy the afternoon sewing session.
I generally can only sew smack in the middle of the night when my kids are asleep. :}
I used to sew during nap time, but my boys don’t nap much anymore. :(. So now it’s 15 minutes here and 15 minutes there – and my boys watch slightly more TV than they used to. Sigh.
I try to avoid sewing nights and weekends because that is family time.
I sew in the evenings and on weekends. It’s my creative time and it does fluctuate by seasons.
The Quick Column books looks fabulous: quick & beautiful quilts are always a winning combination! Thanks so much!
I like to sew on Tues. mornings with my friend. I was just gtelling said friend about this book after I saw it on Nancy’s show last weekend. Hope I win:) Thanks for the opportunity!

Mornings work best for me when I’m fresh.
Greetings from Ohio! I’m bored at work so I decided to browse your blog on my iphone during
lunch break. I really like the information you provide here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home.
I’m surprised at how quick your blog loaded on my phone ..
I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyways, good blog!

Nancy’s new book, is awesome, very modern & it is great for a beginner. I especially love the Chevron Quilt. Thanks for the chance to win,.
I would loooooove this book but I’m on a really tight budget right now so got my fingers majorly crossed!!!
I’ve recently retired and am just starting to get back into quilting and sewing. But I see lots of time on the horizon and lots of UFO’s and ideas in the works so I’ll be sewing lots. This is a good book and here’s hoping I get a copy of it. Thanks. kthurn@bektel.com
I like to sew all the time, but I typically only have the time on the weekends when I’m not at work. Thanks.
When I sew, I like to forget I have anything else to do, and just work at it until it’s FINISHED!!! Which means I don’t do a lot of sewing, unfortunately. I own Nancy’s ‘busy woman’ & ’10-20-30′ minute books, but haven’t put the ideas into practice. Thanks for the chance to add another of her titles to my collection!
I like to set some time on the weekend aside for my projects and its usually over a two day all day period I end up working on them!
On the weekends -I start thinking about sewing in the morning but I don’t actually sit down to sew until late afternoons. I saw your Modern Neutrals fabric yesterday at my LQS but they only had layer cakes. Can’t wait for her to get in yardage –loved it even more in person!
I enjoy sewing after supper during the weekdays or saturdays.
I like to sew when the kids are at school — usually 10am-2pm.
I love to sew when I get off work, which is mid-day for me. I don’t have very good lighting so night time is no good.
My favorite time to sew is in the morning when the sun is shining through my sewing room window. I am filled with the warmth and inspiration of a new day! Would love to win this book!

I like to sew in the early afternoon when the sun is streaming into my sewing room.
I love your selection of colors and the solid between the pieced strips. I love to sew from late morning to late afternoon. Early mornings and evenings are just too crazy busy with kids activities and meals.
