My kids all want to learn to sew, and so we are on a sewing adventure, and they hope to end up with new quilts handmade at their own hands! Join us as we sew through the summer each week! Sewing with Kids — week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4, week 5, and week 6.
This week, Sophia had a big week – she made her quilt top yesterday! Look at this smile —
Earlier in the summer she had selected a Hoopla Layer Cake, and patiently waited until I gave her the green light to actually make it. Over the weekend while I was working on my doll quilt, she was hovering; really wanted to be sewing. So I had her pull out her Layer Cake and match up the pieces that she wanted to put side by side. She set them in a pile and was happy to let me finish!
To sew this up, I helped add a couple pins so the layers would stay in place, then we talked about chain piecing, and put it into practice!
Sophia has been my helper off and on the last year, as she was home in the afternoons, and would cut apart my chains for me, and offer her insight on fabric decisions. She’s quite familiar with the process, and was ready for the next step every time I turned around!
We sewed together 7 rows of 6 squares, Sophia decided where each piece would go, and made sure that each piece returned to the right spot after taking the row to the sewing machine.
After sewing the rows I did scan and rework a few seams, just to be certain that it stays together! Gave her a lesson on using a seam ripper even. Tomorrow Emmalie plans to make a similar quilt, in fabrics of her own selection, and hopefully we can get some fuzzy fabric soon to finish them both! I just need to get Ella started on the quilt she selected from my book, and we will be set.
Have you been sewing with the kids in your life?
Amy
Love this! I don’t have kids of my own but I’ve been thinking about holding a ‘learn to sew’ class or workshop for kids. When I was litt,e I would have been ecstatic to take a class like that, or to work on something like you showed here. Thanks for sharing :)
It’s so cool to see someone so young with a strong interest in sewing and design!
Sophia’s smile says it all! She did a great job!
That quilt is awesome! It’s wonderful that you’re having fun sewing with your kids! :)
Sophia, you did a great job!!!! Wow!
And Mom, you also did a great job teaching her. I love that some of us are passing along our knowledge. That’s the way it should be!
lovely, lovely, lovely !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
congratulations ♥♥♥
oh, you are so lucky to have girls to sew with! (although that means sharing your quilting supplies!) I have two boys (very manly boys who wouldn’t even CONSIDER sewing because ‘sewing is for girls’ afterall, LOL)
Your daughter is a great partner in crime!! You have a great quilter “in the making” on your hands. I bet you smile away when she sews.
All the those colors are so wonderful together.
Great job, Sophia!
Awesome smile :D
What is this chain piecing? I am SO looking that up. Anything that can potentially make my life easier…I am all in.
And to Sophia….
Your quilt top is a masterpiece and YOU are a rare and precious jewel ;) Tell your mom you want to take a trip to TX.
My Granddaughter and I are following along with you and sewing together. She loves sewing and wants a sewing machine for Christmas. She is a very mature 6 1/2 and I’m pondering whether she’s too young for her own beginner machine. I saw one that looked perfect but can’t remember where or what brand. I THINK it may have been Singer. What’s your opinion???
Blessings

Awww! I love it! I hope my daughter is as enthused about yours. She did such a great job.
SO much fun! She did such a great job! What fun childhood memories you’re building.
When I teach kids to sew the throat plate is a fingers off zone. I only mention this because Sophia’s little fingers are so close to the presser foot. One moment of inattention and…
I had a student once who sewed right through her finger, and I was sitting right beside her, too! Thank goodness she missed the bone, but after a trip to the ER she swore off sewing and never came back.
Please, be careful sweetie!
The quilt is lovely by the way. Way to go!
You are a really good mom :)
My son still hasn’t finished some potholders I started with him before Christmas. Maybe we will work on them over our last week of summer.
Truly great seeing the quilting gene passed on to new generations. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next…
Such a colorful fun quilt and a special memory made.
Lovely, Amy. Quite an accomplishment – well done.
BTW, what do you do withthe other kids to get time with one?
