There’s something sacred about making a graduation quilt—especially when it’s for your youngest. Owen has graduated from high school this spring, and this aurora borealis quilt is my way of honoring his growth, his curiosity, and the bright future ahead of him.

Owen's Graduation Quilt

When we began planning the quilt together, we scrolled through images for color inspiration. He was drawn to the deep, rich hues of the aurora borealis—the peacock-like sky dancing in purples, blues, and greens. With that vision, we selected a range of Moda Bella Solids: Aubergine, Lilac, Ash, French Blue, Admiral Blue, Peacoat, Horizon Blue, Peacock, Green, Seafood, Lagoon, Prussian Blue, and Prune. For the backing, I surprised him with Starry in Natural, a soft wideback that feels like stargazing on fabric, and is so soft!

The Pattern & Process

I started this quilt with pure improv piecing—no rules, just rhythm. But I quickly realized that the scale of a twin-size quilt (76″ x 96″) demanded more structure, for me. I was stuck, overwhelmed, and struggling to move forward.

That’s when I stepped back, defined a block unit, and everything shifted. Once the structure was in place, the piecing flowed and the colors started to sing. I still kept the spirit of improvisation by randomly placing colors within each block. The end result feels like a patchwork night sky—unexpected, energetic, and full of movement.

And speaking of movement… here’s a behind-the-scenes photo of the seams. So many seams!

To quilt it, I found myself in another loop of indecision, but opted for one of my favorite designs on the computerized machine. Window Panes adds texture and movement without taking away from all the color and piecing in the quilt top.

I used a soft aqua thread color that blends in beautifully over the top of all the colors in the quilt. Thankfully this aurora borealis quilt came together just in time for graduation and the party we threw for Owen,

More Graduation Quilts

This marks the fourth graduation quilt I’ve made for my kids. You can see the others here if you’re curious:

Each one reflects their personality and their path. And each one taught me something new about letting go, showing up, and stitching love into fabric.

Owen, I’m so proud of you.

P.S. I’m clearing space in the studio and bundled up 24 of my favorite printed quilt patterns for just $67. It’s a great deal—and a fun surprise to open in the mail. Only while supplies last! [See the bundle →]
