A Modern Twist :: Review & Giveaway!

A Modern Twist: Create Quilts with a Colorful Spin by Natalie Barnes, is a great new book that came out last month. Natalie spent many years as an interior designer in LA and has now focused all her design mojo on quilt patterns and quilting!

 A Modern Twist by Natalie Barnes - Review & Giveaway - AmysCreativeSide.com

I’ve known Natalie for a few years now, going to Market, and interacting via email and online. The thing YOU need to know about Natalie, is how generous and encouraging she is. Her voice is very evident throughout the book, and she has taken some of the most important elements in design and offers them in quilting terms, giving you current tools for your quilting toolbox.

Color + Contrast + Composition

My favorite design element is contrast, and not always high contrast! I love creating subtle differences in quilts by using similar tones, and various scales of fabric. To do this, I usually pull a large number of fabrics, and then start weeding out the “offenders” usually they are some of my favorite fabrics, but don’t play with the overall group of fabrics. They can have too much color, or the wrong tone. Sometimes the print is too large for the small/medium scale prints in the group.

Natalie walks you through all of these ideas with a few extra tips too!

 A Modern Twist by Natalie Barnes - Review & Giveaway - AmysCreativeSide.com

Sometimes contrast is about breaking up the expected design, and others it’s all about the fabrics. Natalie encourages you to try it all, and offers insights for success on every page.

The projects in A Modern Twist are accessible, and not all of them are quilts. The table runner on the cover, and picnic set are two of my favorite small projects included in the book.

i just went to the MID- ATLANTIC QUILT SHOW- HAMPTON, VA, about a week ago. Awesome show. bought some small things there, such as some fat eighths in related patterns and small patterns to make 3 different quilts, from one of the vendors. i also purchased some silk to print images on to add to one of the quilts. i will be making these for my grown kids. right after the show, my friends and i always go to a great fabric shop near the show, and use our coupons for discounted quilting accessories, a pinch, rulers, fat quarters, etc. a really great way to start a weekend or to dream for an entire weekend a( 4 days) of quilt show musings.

Most recent fabric purchase was a yard of a black and whit fabric necessary to finish a quilt. Rushed to Joann’s and picked it up. The rest of the quilt was ordered online from 3 sources and then the apothecary labels to represent Mom’s job were printed on printable fabric. The size of those labels required a filler fabric thus the black and white.

  43. Susan March 10, 2015 at 9:29 am - Reply

The last purchase was a light grey fabric, for use as a background. I’m tired of white, but still not enthralled with grey. At least this one is in between!

Well, I hate to admit that I was just at the LQS two days in a row. This following a quilters garage sale swap a few days before. So I bought some black and white striped fabric for a class I am going to be taking next week on the Gees Bend quilting techniques. I also bought some misc FQ’s. The trouble is now I have my heart set on a newsprint piece for the back of a baby quilt for my great nephew that is made up of all kona solids. It is never ending all the things out there are so beautiful!

The last fabric I bought (three days ago!) was a black and white print and a WOW print. I’ve been working on a B&W quilted sweatshirt jacket and these fabrics, while not absolutely necessary, are ostensibly “backup” in case I need juuuuuust a little bit more. :-)

Anyway, who doesn’t need more black and white in their stash?

It was Dec. 21 and I had just realized I needed such an eensy bit of white to finish a tablerunner for my daughter. (And of course the post office misplaced it in the Christmas rush, and she didn’t get it until Jan 8!!)

Hi there, Looking forward to getting hold of your book. I just love looking at designs as it fires up my inspiration. I recently bought some edging for a quilt I am about to make for my elderly 2nd cousin and while I was there saw something a friend was after so picked it up for her. When I told her, she was so thrilled she came right over and bought me 5 pieces of fabric – mostly cottons in lovely blue hues and bright yellows, 2 of them are dress-making pieces! Oh you can’t imagine how special, thrilled and grateful I felt. So, next quilt for my elderly cousin – materials all picked out (picture is one just made, 3rd this year and my cousin’s will follow that pattern) but now the thrill of staring at these materials for awhile until inspiration for the quilt design is borne! How I love it.

I’m designing and creating collage quilts lately, and loving modern design, i am purchasing modern, large florals, and well… anything floral! i do love the modern influence, and this book is on my wish list. thank you!

My most recent was a charm pack I purchased for a class I was attending a couple of weeks ago. I went to the class, but, because I’m a rebel, I had already asked the tutor’s if I could make a design of my own instead, which she was happy for me to do. I was only really going to spend the day with two friends (the tutor and another friend) and it was a super day and I love the quilt too.

My most recent purchase was specially printed Dr. Who fabric for a birthday quilt for my daughter’s birthday. She loves Dr. Who so I thought this would be a fun reminder of one of her all time favorite shows. It’s also one of the first quilts I’ve ever made, and is the first twin size one. I’m really enjoying making it!

I’m gathering red fabric and red and white fabric for a very trad QAYG log cabin quilt. It’s fun to stash with a purpose.

I just bought some fabric the day before yesterday! I try to save up to buy fabric because I want to fill a flat rate box.

My most recent fabric purchase was around Christmas time! Wow, that is awhile ago! I bought fat quarters from “Collage” by Carolyn Friedlander. I am on a no buy for now. I just finished the top of a blooming nine-patch, I am finishing the binding on a table runner and hot pads, I am creating fabric headbands, and I just started a quilt-as-you-go tote. I love creating. I love quilting more than any other sewing. I am just discovering this as I have been sewing other projects.

My last fabric purchase was sometime last year, Arrows by Cotton & Steel. I haven’t quite settled on what I’m going to make with it, either a bag or a pillow cover, but it will be for my friends’ daughter who has recently started her own business, Portland Archery. (Can you tell I’m a proud “Auntie”?)

My latest purchase was to buy some end of bolts from my friend who closed her quilt shop. Sad to have this shop closed but happy for her retirement.

Just this past Sunday I bought some graphic black and white fabrics, then tossed in a b/w/red print for fun. On Tuesday I won some b/w/r fat quarters from a local guild raffle. I’m sensing a theme in my future…

Just yesterday, I checked out a new (to me) shop and left with three yards of fabric that was on clearance, including two yards of the Botanics line from Carolyn Friedlander. What a score!

I just finished a quilt top for my mother’s 89th birthday made up of leftover bright colored fabrics from my daughter’s 16th birthday and black pebbled fabric from my son’s graduation quilt. I had to purchase more of the black for the backing of her quilt.

My latest fabric buy is from Hancocks of Paducah, lots of Ta Dot at a great price. They are impossible to buy directly here in NZ. As for a project, well in theory they are for a Midnight in the Oasis quilt, but I’ sort of scared of starting given its complexity. I have to learn so many new skills, I’m wavering on it. Maybe another Gypsy Wife quilt instead.
