Featuring Deb — A Blogger’s Quilt Festival Quilter!

Today’s featured quilter is Deb, who blogs at Works in Progress!  I hope you enjoy getting to know Deb a bit better ~

1. When did you begin quilting?

I’ve always made stuff but about 5 years ago I had a hip surgery which didn’t work so well and I couldn’t walk very well for about a year. I really got into patchwork then as a means of keeping busy and productive! My kids loved the quilts and because they could drag them around their beds stayed tidier. After I had my hip replaced I just kept right on making quilts… each year they just keep coming out of my sewing corner! Many of our friends and family have one or two quilts from our home.

2. Why do you quilt?
I love working with colour… playing around with fabric combinations is the best part for me. I also really like giving someone a quilt, it’s like a virtual {{hug}} when I can’t be there. The other part I like is the hours spent quietly sewing at the machine, especially chain piecing. I do find I do more when I’m stressed as it’s the best form of stress relief for me. I like making a quilt for someone who is sick or sad as I have plenty of time to pray for them as I sew up their quilt.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
Anything cut small enough looks good!

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?
I made the quilt from the first Material Obsession book and I chose those bright florally fabrics because the big blocks of fabrics look like buckets of flowers. I love the way it turned out.

5. Do you sew other things?

Yes I love to use recycled materials, particularly old sheets and shirts. I make clothes and cushions, pencil rolls, aprons… you know that sort of thing, oh and loads of bags!

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?

I’ve been married for 18 years to David and together we run a painting and decorating company (David does the lion’s share). We have four children…. Chrissy 17, James 14, Reuben 8 and Annie-Rose is 14 months. We’ve managed to spread our children out so we’ll have teenagers for 22 years! I’m absolutely passionate about encouraging others to be creative and making that accessible, which is one of the reasons the tutorials on my blog usually use recycled materials. I am interested in sustainability though and how that can work for a family. I’m never happier than when pottering about a thrift shop finding bargains or rearranging said treasures in our house!

Thanks for sharing Deb!  I love your hand quilting in these quilts.

Happy quilting~
