Rooftop Wonders is a pattern I designed for Curated Quilts. In April, we had a put a call for mini quilts out with a Pinterest board of inspiration, and that’s where I found inspiration for my quilt!
It’s a little hard to tell, but there’s a block unit in the quilt top. I made 21 rectangular blocks for a throw size quilt. Lately I’ve been experimenting with rectangular blocks which makes for an interesting shift in movement in some quilts.
Color
The color placement is completely random, which was a lot of fun to do! I used Bella Solids from Moda Fabrics in a variety of muted tones. Having the “background” fabric in different colors adds to the intrigue of the design, in my opinion. And keeps the quilt from being too much of any one color.
In writing the pattern I listed the number of strips, rectangles or squares, but leave the color decisions up to the maker. I love how the color placement in my quilt gives the piece a little motion and some unique shapes when the colors meet.
Quilting
To quilt this one I used a digital design that is very angular and random. Usually this design is stitched out in a 10-11″ repeat, but I scaled it down to compliment the small pieces in the quilt top. The smallest squares finish at 1″, it’s not hard thou- I promise!
While Rooftop Wonders is precisely pieced, the random color placement makes it entirely unique and a lot of fun to sew! Part of the fun of working on Curated Quilts is pushing myself out of my usual design process to create.
Curated Quilts is about to start shipping, you can learn more about the first issue here.
Happy Quilting –

Hi Amy,
WOW – I just love this quilt. It looks totally random, yet controlled if that makes any sense. I love the fabrics you chose, especially the gray and tan/beige running throughout. It’s really stunning. ~smile~ Roseanne
