Week 7

This week of improv quilting I was largely inspired by Quiltcon, and some of the amazing quilts that came out of the show on Instagram. I had fun playing with the log cabin type blocks, and piecing leftover bits from my cutting mat.

My first log cabin, places the black strategically so that weight is added the lower left side of the block. I love how the black pieces seem to float in the white. I think I could add to that block indefinitely, and completely enjoy the process!

I’ve been cutting another project, that is not improv, and as always there’s little bits of extra fabric from the strip cut. I’ve taken to keeping them in a pile near my sewing machine, and piecing a few together, then exploring how they might fit together. One block was mostly neutral fabrics and other days it’s been all the colorful pieces. It’s quite fun and satisfying to put the pieces together this way!

I finished the week with another log cabin block, this time a courthouse steps variation. Again, with the floating black pieces in the white. I might have to reverse the fabric placement and try again.

I’m looking forward to trimming all the units to a more block shape, and seeing which ones will fit together into a quilt top.

Happy Quilting –

Amy
