Week 6

About halfway through the week, I decided that trimming down my blocks to a few specific sizes would be a good thing. I need to pull out all the units, and trim to 6″, 9″ and 12″ so that I can more readily puzzle them together, and think about sizing them up in some cases. For example, some of the 6″ units, will be encased in white so that they are more of a feature in the quilt top. This will tone down some of the crazy, going on with so many different units.

I am planning multiple quilts with all the units. Having a collective style for each quilt will help to unify the pieces as well.

Improv piecing is stretching the way I think about piecing, and forcing me to take chances on combinations that I might not have considered before. I’m really enjoying breaking all the rules, and just stitching until a unit feels complete.

The blocks to the right have a bit more color than weeks past. I’ve been cutting another project, and the scraps were too fun to put away! So some of the units do look a little less improv than others, since those scraps were cut with a ruler. They were still a lot of fun to put together!

Have you tried any improv piecing yet?

Happy Quilting –

Amy
