While not a new concept at all, rope bowls are entirely new to me and SO fun to make!
Cotton clothesline about 1/4″ thick is ideal for this project, I’ve found it at the grocery store, Walmart, and a local hardware store (I had to look around a bit after one ran out!). Start by making a small coil in the bottom, add a few pins and secure with an X, then go back to the center and start to spiral around with your zig-zag stitch.
If you are concerned about your machine handling the bulk, it’s not too bad actually! I would compare it to sewing over a few seams at the center of a quilt block, and since you are using the same height the entire time most machines will happily sew along as usual. The rope is really soft!
I started a pinterest board for sewing with rope, included a few of the tutorials that I looked at when I was getting started, I hope you will check it out for more info!
Have you made a rope bowl? I’m thinking macrame might be next!
I hope you are blessed today –
Amy
I love the clean modern look of your rope bowls. I have always planned to make these myself, but just haven’t taken the time to read up on it. Is it possible to send me your link to the tutuorials that you referenced in your post. Thanks and Have a Wonderful Blessed Merry Christmas with your family.
Hi Dar! The tutorials are in the Pinterest board in the post. I hope you have a chance to try it soon! They are so fun!
I too would like the link for your bowls. Also what size/kind of needle did you use in your machine?
Hi! The tutorials are in the Pinterest board in the post – I used a 90/14 topstitch needle just like I do for piecing. Have fun!
