Coming home from Quilt Market, I knew I had one project that I really wanted to take on, just for me – well kinda. I had gotten the EZ Quilting template over the busy summer months, and was inspired by a painting seen while shopping online for a challenge quilt to be entered into Quiltcon. I ended up calling the quilt Maverick, because it’s kinda outside the norm…here’s more –
I pulled out my Match Maker, and the collection of Bella’s that I had on hand and wanted to include, and came up with a plan.
Then spent hours piecing the Maverick quilt top into rows, and a few more hours quilting it! I didn’t want to piece every triangle in the rows, I thought it would be distracting to have unnecessary seams when it was all the same fabric. So my biggest challenge was to determine the length of strip to cut between each triangle piece. It wasn’t too hard though! Just took some trial and error, with a little math thrown in.
I’m so excited about the results! I love the movement in the quilt!
To quilt it, I pulled out my ruler, and bounced the needle between the shapes. It’s really a fun way to add loads of texture, and highlight the piecing.
I’ll be waiting this month, with the 1100 other quilters that entered quilts, to see if this quilt will be hanging at Quiltcon in Pasadena next year. Did you enter a quilt? Leave a link, I’d love to check it out!
Quilt Stats:
Made with Bella solids, and Crossweave in black
Measures 61″ x 75
Quilted with random straight lines in the background only.
Thanks for stopping by –
Amy
What’s not to LOVE! Color with a Grey background to make it POP! Nope I didn’t make a Quilt for QuiltCon.
Thanks Mary!
Amy, I just love this! There’s something about the little triangles against the grey–makes my heart go pitty pat :) And that you left some triangles out there without a mate–genius!
Quick question about the quilting, Amy. What did you do when you ran into a triangle–stitch in the ditch along the triangle to begin quilting in another place or just stopping and tying off and burying threads later (yikes) or . . .? Your quilting is absolutely gorgeous, and I’d love to give it a shot (on something much smaller).
Thanks Karen – I’m really happy with the outcome! The quilting was started and stopped on one side, I would simply pause when I reached a triangle to determine where to go next, the point the ruler and go. Each point is essentially a pivot. Good luck trying it out – it’s really fun to do!
It is stunning – absolutely love it. I am sure it will be hanging at Quiltcon – good luck
Thanks Pauline!
Love the solids against the grey. Your quilting is lovely too!
Thanks Tisha! :)
This is awesome! The quilting looks amazing.
Thanks Anja!
Amy this looks great. I really love the quilting. I did enter a few quilts. We;ll see what happens but I’m still going, no matter what.
Thanks Carrie! Good Luck to you and your quilts!
Amy, the quilt looks great! Good luck to you.
Thanks Patty!
This quilt is so fantastic!!! The quilling really makes it special!
Thanks Amy – I totally agree!
What a wonderful quilt. I see how the triangles were set into the rows (top half and bottom half) but can’t see the inset lines for the sides of the triangles. I presume this is how they were done.
The visual effect is stunning.
Thanks Sandra! Yes the triangles were pieced into the rows, all template cutting :)
This Maverick is FANTASTIC!!!! I really love the spaced triangles, the awesome colors with the background, and the quilting – OH MY!!! Nice work and I hope you make this into a pattern we can buy! Best of luck at Quiltcon! This is a winner for sure!!!!
Thanks Cathy!! I have all my notes handy, but haven’t done anything to make it a pattern yet.. . yet :) It might work well with my next fabric line thou – shhhhh
This is gorgeous. I REALLY hope you make this into a pattern. I would buy it!
Love it, too and have fingers crossed that it makes the cut. It’s so different and wonderful!
Beautiful! It is so much fun to see the wide range of quilts coming out of this challenge. I love the pops of color against the neutral background.
Thanks Cassandra! There does seem to be a big variety of quilts – it will be great to see them together at Quiltcon!
Love this quilt! HST are so fun and these are so colorful! Good luck.
This reminds me of the Tibetan prayer flags….. really wonderful quilt!
Love the quilting – I’ll have to try it although I’m not sure how you managed to miss the triangles bouncing off I’d probably just hit them all. Congrats on the acceptance to QuiltCon with over 1800 I believe it’s quite an honor.
This is so gorgeous. Caught my attention right away. I REALLY hope you will make a pattern available.
Thanks Irene! I have all my notes, but no pattern yet. Thanks for the encouragement thou :)
I’m making a quilt for someone using her father’s ties (he recently passed away). She picked out your quilt from Pinterest for me to model on. She also loved your quilting, and I just bought a new machine with a ruler foot. I can’t wait to get started! I’m glad you have a few photos posted to help me with construction.
