It seems like most everyone is back to school, and my friends Barb and Mary of Me & My Sister Designs, have a great new book, Precut Primer, full of lessons for quilters! I love how the book is laid out with grades 1-12, each project slightly more challenging, but I have to say, working with a precut automatically takes away the most challenging part – Cutting!
I opted to make the 5th grade quilt with a Chic Neutrals Jelly Roll, I started last Friday and enjoyed sewing it over the weekend and this week. I don’t often sew from other peoples patterns, mostly because there aren’t enough hours in my day, but sewing this pattern was so fun, and easy! I’ve been watching Grey’s Anatomy while sewing lately with headphones – logged a few episodes with this project – ha!
The finished quilt is dynamic! I’m a sucker for a log cabin-type block too, love the diversity of designs available, and how simple or complex they can be.
You can see a little bit more of the overall design here – fun, isn’t it?
I added computerized quilting, and think it adds just the right amount of texture to the quilt.
And bound it by machine, with this new to me stitch, on my new Baby Lock machine. The little X in the binding has me gushing about the stitch – I love it!
The book as a whole, has 12 fun projects, all made using one precut or more. Barb & Mary walk you through every step, so even if you are new to quilting you won’t have any trouble getting an ‘A’ in their class! To see all the other quilts in the book, be sure to check out the other bloggers on the hop –

I love to use charm packs – they’re a great size for EPP and not too pricey.
I’m a sucker for new mechanical pencils in lots of bright colors. And I still like fat quarters the best because they’re so versatile. Maybe this new book Precut Primer will change my mind………especially if I win a copy.
Hi Amy and thank you for sharing this great book! I like fat quarters. With those I can get lots of different fabrics and they are still big enough to use in many ways. I have made only one quilt with charm pack, but it is one of my favourites! x Teje
I love, love charm packs! I have about … too many to count;-) About autumn I love pumpkins and apples, yummy!
I love notebooks, pens, washi tapes, journals…
The quilt turned out beautiful and I really like the way you quilted it. My favorite precut is fat quarters, especially in a wonderful stack with all of their friends.
I like layer cakes best. Thanks for the chance!
You have chosen ‘one’ of my favorite patterns in the book to make your beautiful quilt. Love it!
I have always loved the start of a new school year – new books, pens, the smell of a new eraser :)! Maybe it was finding ‘my spot’ at a ‘new’ desk in the classroom for the new year – I don’t know, I guess I just loved that ‘new beginning’ part. Now I love watching the yellow school bus drive past our home, as neighbor children start their new school year; and I happily head down to my sewing room to my favorite precut fabric of Fat Quarters or Half-Yards :)!
I love charm packs. You can get a bit of every print for little output financially and there are so many things you can do with them.
I love the school supplies too! This year my oldest started kindergarten and I was so excited to take her shopping for all the goodies (it’s been a while since I needed new supplies). I would love to check this book out- I love so many pf the patterns I’ve seen and I’m always a little unsure of what to do with some precuts (charms, min charms, jelly rolls). Thanks for the chance to win!
I have about five jelly rolls that need some attention, so I guess I love jelly rolls! Gorgeous fifth grade quilt you made! Love those fabrics together.
I love Layer Cakes!
Gorgeous Fifth Grade quilt!
I must love charm packs because I sure buy a lot of them! That design looks fantastic in your new fabricc!
I would love to have a couple yards of each fabric in a collection but since I’m not a millionaire, I would have to go with a fat quarter bundle as my next favorite. Love this new book and hope to get my hands on one soon. Thank you for a great giveaway. timewilltell63 at yahoo dot com
My favorite precuts are the charm packs & jelly rolls! Love the patterns in this book & the grades are so unique for featuring a quilt! Thanks for the giveaway!
I like all of the variety of precuts.
Back to school always seems like the start of a new season of life.
Fat Quarters are my favorite pre-cut – I like the others but this one gives you a better amount to work with for bed size quilts if you get a big bundle.
this is so very pretty. I am still new to pre-cuts so don’t have a favorite yet.
I like the slightly cooler weather right now
Love this variation on the log cabin (my favorite block). My favorite pre-cuts are fat quarters, but I also have a good sized collection of charm squares. Thanks.
Love flat quarters, Bits of wonderful candy to put into quilts.
I like Layer Cakes and the cooler weather XXX
I can’t seem to get enough jelly rolls, layer cakes, and, and, and . . . . I love back to school time–loved it when I taught and still love it now that I’m retired.
I like all the pre-cuts, depending on my project. Love the changing colors of Fall.
I use fat quarters the most. I like to make scrappy quilts with fabrics from many different collections, so I mix and match! Love your quilt!
I like this time of year because it is getting a little darker sooner and I love to quilt at that time. I love pre-cuts especially layer cakes.
I have found some wonderful patterns using layer cakes, so that is my current favorite!
What a great book! My favorite pre-cut is fat quarters. Thanks for the chance!
I love all the precuts but I have used the charm packs the most.
Beautiful quilt! My favorite pre-cuts are the layer cakes!
Fat eighths are my usual favorite precut, but lately I have been raiding my charm square stash and need to stash some more!
I love school sales too, Amy….I stock up on glue sticks, notebooks & fun school stuff. No, not for me–I teach Sunday School crafts so it’s a great way to save money…alright, I do get some glue sticks for me–they’re so much cheaper now! My favorite precuts are FAT QUARTERS! I’ve found they can be more useful to me by cutting down to my own precuts, depending on the pattern I use—PLUS I get more fabric that way! LOL, like I need more (did I say that out loud?!). Thanks for the sweet giveaway.
I love your quilt. What I love most about this time of year is watching the kids pick out their school supplies. Had the pleasure of helping my granddaughters do this a few weeks ago.
My favorite pre-cut are the charm packs.

I like layer cakes the best-very versatile and I have several in my stash.
Love the start of Fall and the cool, crisp weather.
I love the fact that the schools starting again means that autumn is coming, and that’s my favourite season.
I love fat eighths – lots of variety, but enough of each print to sprinkle throughout a scrappy quilt.
My favorite precut is the fat quarter. It is so versatile – it can be cut into strips, squares, etc. and be used in a pattern calling for a particular precut. It can also be cut into more than one precut size if a pattern calls for it. ktsquiltdreams (at)gmail (dot)com
I like all precuts, but I think my favorite is the fat quarter. I can always cut them into almost any shape/size I want.
School Supplies!!!! And such Deals!!!
Graph paper composition books, colored pencils, clips, binders…Whooopeee!
I love layer cakes! So many possibilities!
I like FQ’s best. As a kid, I always loved the brand new box of crayons.
I love buying school supplies even though my kids are getting too big to need them! My favortie precut is a fat quarter-so much versatility.
I can’t resist a cute FQ.
I really like all the precuts, but love to go whole hog and get the fat quarter bundle when I can afford it. Then you can do all kinds of things and maybe have plenty left to do fun things for the back of the quilt, too.
I love shopping the school supply aisle this time of year. So many fun things to be found!
I’m 62 yrs old and I still browse the school supplies when I shop. You never know when you might need something! Like washable school glue for basting.
I love charm packs. Add a bit of yardage and you have an easy quilt. Purple glue sticks are also irresistable this time of year!
i love mini charms – they are soo hard to resist.
Fat Quarters. If they sell half yards, I’d buy those instead! Thank you or a chance.
I love layer cakes. They are great for lap quilts.
I used to collect half yards, but with larger collections I am going to fat quarters – layer cakes are my go to when I want to play.
Charm packs :)
I am a fan of layercakes. I even have one in the Chic neutrals. It looks like there are lots of patterns in this book that I would love to make. Thanks
I used to buy yardage–several yards at a time–but then I didn’t have much variety so now I buy fat quarters or half yard bundles. The quilts in this book look great and it would make a great addition to my quilting library. I’m also thinking Christmas present for my daughter who is just starting to sew quilts.
I love fat quarter, or fat eighth bundles, but if the budget is tight, I go for a layer cake!
I’m a fat quarter girl. And I love the crisp air and beautiful colors of fall. This looks like a cute book.
I love seeing the little kids lined up, waiting for the school bus on the first day of school. They look so excited and hopefully about what the coming school year will bring.
i love precuts…charms, layer cakes, jelly rolls…you name it, I love ’em!
I also love back to school supplies this time of year. There are so many fun colors and styles!!!
HI love your quilt! Love the little ‘x’ stitches too! Thanks for sharing!
FORGOT THIS>LOVE CHARM PACKS!!!
I love the warm (not sweltering) evenings….and the peaches. Nothing like a fresh peach.
The precut I buy the most is the layer cake — big enough to have options but not so expensive as to break the bank.
I’m a fan of layer cakes. I like the thought that they are already cut in perfect little squares. Thanks!
My favorite precut has always been the Jelly Roll – although I am trying to expand my horizons and use more layer cakes :)
I love charm packs – getting to try out a little bit of all the prints in a range!
I love all kinds of precuts – fat quarters offer endless possibilities, jelly-rolls are quick and easy along with charm packs. Lots of fun ways to be creative!!
I love fat quarter bundles.
Fat quarters are mY favorites but jelly rolls arE a close second.
I like fat quarters best as I can use them for all manner of sewing projects. They are useful for facings, cuffs and pockets for my dressmaking.
I think my favorite precut is a fat quarter-it’s enough to make almost any pattern with as long as there’s enough fats!
I love the quiet during the day, especially the morning.
I like Fat Quarters the best since you get so much fabric. But the layer cake is my second choice, I like getting a little bit of each print in a collection.
Jelly rolls are my favourite. Great quilt and quilting.
I’m like that line in the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks movie “You’ve Got Mail”. I love a bundle of new freshly sharpened pencils.
I love jellly rolls most :)
I’m addicted to charm packs. I cannot seem to resist buying them. I have a huge bin now and I need patterns that use them. This book looks perfect!
I haven’t met a precut I didn’t like! Looking at my stash, fat quarters are my favorite, but I too am addicted to charm packs and they seem to be multiplying!
My favorite precuts are layer cakes! Thanks for sharing with us.
I guess I like charm squares the most because that’s what has overrun my sewing room! But then, it’s hard for me to pass up fat quarters, too.
That stitch on the binding is gorgeous! My favorite precut is the fat quarter stack.
I love fat quarters, now if I could get myself to actually cut them up…
I love fat quarters because you have more pattern options with fat quarters than with other precuts.
I enjoy fat quarters, because you can get a piece of all the fabrics in the collection.
My favorite precuts are jellyrolls. They can be used in so many ways. Thanks for sharing the giveaway!
I love the excitement of finding out who my kids’ teachers will be and who they have in their classes from last year. I love hearing stories about their day that I won’t necessairly hear as the year progresses, because it’s all new and exciting right now.
I love the versatility of layer cakes. Your quilt is gorgeous, and thanks for the giveaway!
I love fall, back to school, and school supplies!!! I am a school supply junkie! One of my favorite movie scenes is in You’ve Got Mail when they talk about a bouquet of pencils. . I also love working with charm packs and layer cakes, so much fun!
I go through phases over my favourite precut, they all have their advantages. At the moment fat quarters are winning. The book looks great. Thanks for the chance to win. I have your think big book and love it!
It is layer cakes for me
I love to buy fat quarter bundles, I also love jelly rolls as they are great fro scrappy binding.
I was a math teacher in a classroom for ten years and then began teaching online. So I have to say that this time of year brings on the desire for school supplies. My love of school supplies is right up there with my love of fabric!
And I love the smells and tastes of fall. Everything is so beautiful!
I love the jelly rolls! They’re just so cute!
I like the mini charm packs.
Fat quarters are my favorite precuts with charm packs running a close second!
My favourite pre-cuts are charm packs.
Well, that’s a fun quilt! I love fat quarters! Are they considered precuts? And I really miss, still, getting a new box of crayons each year as a kid. I almost went and bought myself some school supplies just because. But fabric is a good replacement. And… Those composition notebooks are hard to resist!
I like jelly rolls and I LOVE your quilt!!!!!
My favourite precut is a jelly roll. I love sewing scrappy quilts and I find that a jelly roll gives me lots of options.
My favorite precut is the fat quarter bundle but I sure like your jelly roll in this quilt.
Asking me to choose a favourite pre-cut is like asking a mother who her favourite child is. I’m most likely to buy charm packs because they are relatively cheap and are easy to pack but I think I like jelly rolls more.
I love the sales on school supplies. A great time to stock up on printer paper, colored pencils/crayons, glue stocks, page protectors, etc.
My favorite precuts are layer cakes. thanks for the chance to win
love layer cakes, thanks
I also LOOOOVE Log Cabin!!!! Your quilt is AWESOME!!!! I love Fat Quarters & Charms..lots of versatility! Just got a few Layer Cakes, but haven’t used yet…& did use a jelly Roll to make a quick quilt awhile back. Precuts are such a time saver…an are such fun! :)
I love charm packs, that way I get a little bit of each fabric an don’t have to buy a yard of each. (Even though I may want to)
I love layer cakes, so versatile
I love fat quarters the most. I generally don’t know what I will make when I buy fabric so fat quarters provide the greatest amount of versatility.
I love all the precuts, but my absolute favorite would have to be fat quarters!
Right now I’m loving charm packs. I am starting to learn the EpP . These are good. I also love looking for and purchasing journals!
I love a Charm pack, nice cheap, easy way of getting a whole collection of a range, and so versatile. It’s the end of winter here in Australia, so no back to school after summer for us, but I am looking forward to spring and some warmer weather after a particularly cold winter.
I use several of the precuts, but I use fat quarters the most.
I think charm packs are the most fun. It ‘s the best way to play with a new fabric line. I always had a tradition that on the first day of school when my kids went back I would make a stop at my local quilt shop!
Based on my stash I’d say charm packs are my favorie precut.
I work at a university, so back to school for me means all the kids returning from summer break.
I love back-to-school time because it means I can start sewing in earnest again! Just love it. I’m really curious about that machine binding that you did. I also have a baby lock (symphony) and curious how you did it.
As a teacher, I love this time of year so I can get back to meet students! It’s great to see their excitement and eagerness to learn. My favorite pre-cut is a fat quarter. With them, I can cut them into any width I need for strips. Your quilt is gorgeous!
I like to buy fat quarter bundles, but I also have a healthy stack of charm packs. Love the quilt you made. Log cabin is one of the blocks I’ve been wanting to try.
I like jelly rolls the best. I look forward to shopping for school supplies even though I don’t have any little ones. We bring in supplies for the battered women’ shelter at work and I need a few special pens and notebooks for myself while shopping. What a great quilt you made from the Primer.
Love this pattern. I have several jellyrolls laying around. I might have to try this.
I prefer to know what I am going to quilt and buy the pre-cut that fits the best. If I don’t have plans I buy Layer cakes. I love your modern neutrals–am making a baby quilt for a boy with it so it can grow with him and not be too babyish. I love the chic neutrals, too.
My favourite pre-cuts are Jelly Rolls, I have only just started to use them, and now I am addicted. Pretty hard to find here in New Zealand though which is a shame. But well worth it when I can get them. Thanks for all the inspiration Amy just love your fabric designs and patterns.
I love jelly rolls. They are so pretty with all the different fabrics peeking out at the sides!
I’ve been away from quilting for a while, so the pre-cuts are new to me. I agree with you, the less cutting the better! From the looks of your eye-catching quilt, I think jelly rolls might be my first go at pre-cuts.
I love the newness of the new school year…New teachers, classmates, friends. I loved it growing up and now I enjoy it with my kids. And your quilt is lovely…that binding stitch is great!
Charm packs are my favorite! I like this time of the year. I can get all the school supplies and accessories at great prices.
Favorite pre-cut – I guess that would be Layer cakes. You can do so much with them. Thanks for an opportunity to win a great prize.
My favorite pre cuts are layer cakes! Thank you for the giveaway, your quilts are beautiful!
I love all the pre cuts but, lately I have been stocking up on charm packs.
Gotta say that I love the versatility of layer cakes. Thanks so much for the giveaway!
I love fat quarter bundles the best. I can make charm packs and layer cakes from them and still have leftovers.
And school supplies are the best at this time of the year – I love colored pencils, markers, paper, crayons, etc. And they’re usually on sale
I love fat quarter bundles the most – a lot of fabric and so many opportunities. Usually find it a bit difficult with jelly rolls, but this pattern is great. Now I know what to do with the Jelly Roll I got recently :)
I love charm packs and layer cakes actually all quilting cuts and fabrics..In South Africa we are now going into Spring.Love colored pencils and markers. You guys are so blessed to have all these designers and fabrics on your doorstep.Keeping my fingers crossed for the give-away +++++
I like them all but jelly rolls are my favorite because I have more patterns for them. This book will be a must have for 1015.
I am a retired elementary teacher who does a fair amount of substitute teaching. Yes, I have my new school supplies. They are waiting for me to finish a new pouch for them. I guess I had better get that pouch done as school starts next week. I also have new school shoes. I am a happy girl. Your version of the 5th Grade quilt is awesome. Thanks for sharing and for offering a copy of Precut Primer.
I love your quilt, fat quarters, and being creative.
I like fat quarters but I’ve put myself on a diet as I have too many! This book looks great!
Great quilt – it looks super in those fabrics! I love the charm pack – mini or regular!
Beautiful quilt, I love the cooler mornings of fall.
I love jelly roll precuts. The versatility is incredible!
Thank you for the giveaway! My favorite precut is Charm Pack. I enjoy getting back to volunteering in a local school.
I love Jelly Rolls! (The kind you eat AND the kind you make fabulous quilts with…) My favorite thing about fall is watching the kids get on the big yellow school bus on a crisp fall morning with a big mug of pumpkin flavored coffee!
I love fat quarters because I always want leftovers of my favorite fabrics! Love this new book and already have some patterns picked out for my next few projects!
i think jelly rolls are my favourite. This time of year I love the kids being all excited to get back to school. New clothes, fresh hair cuts, etc
As a retired teacher with 42 years under my belt–the vast majority in middle school!–I confess that my favorite part of fall is seeing the buses go by and knowing I don’t have to go to school! :) I did love teaching–but I am so done with it!
I love using precuts! It saves time cutting, and I get a piece of each fabric in the line. I’m especially a sucker for jellyrolls and charm packs.
I love layer cakes. If I don’t know what i’m going to use it for I buy a layer cak. You can get 4 charm pkgs out of it, 4 strips of 2 1/2″, very versatile! Thanks for the opportunity! I love this book and all the quilts in it!
Charm packs are my favorite precut. I am always buying them. Am thinking of my grandchildren going back to school and hoping they each have a good year.
It’s a toss up between jelly rolls and layer cakes. Thanks for the chance to win
I am a sucker for charm packs. And I’m a sucker for pens & colored markers in school supply sales. Thanks for a chance to win this book. The projects look great!!
Hi Amy! I love all precuts. They are just so much fun and you can do so much with them. I love being able to have the entire line of a designer. I’m so excited about this book. It just feeds into my love of precuts. And I love pens, pens, and more pens. :)
I really like layer cakes, 10″ squares seem to be just the right size
I have a hard time choosing between layer cakes and jelly rolls! I am a teacher so I love all of the supplies! Displays of pens and pencils, ON SALE! Makes me giddy!
I seem to buy layer cakes. I’d rather have yardage but a layer cake gives you more options than a charm pack or jelly roll and I’m always changing the pattern and need the extra. Thanks.
I seem to have picked up a few jelly rolls lately, so I guess that is my precut of choice at the present time. But that could change tomorrow! Your quilt looks great btw!
I’m starting to use layer cakes more (when they’re on a good sale. They seem to be big enough to use without locking you into a certain width like a jelly roll does.
I like fat quarter bundles. My favorite part of back-to-school is the cooler weather!
I love how the light changes in autumn–suddenly there is a shift, and everything looks more golden. It’s beautiful, every year, without fail.
I like fat quarters! Love the simplicity of the pattern on your quilt, would love this book!
I love charm squares as they are so versatile. I’m in FL and as much as I love living in FL, the fall brings much needed cooler weather. Thank you for the cooler weather. Going to check on your Quilt Planner now.
Fat quaters are my favorite. Back to school means more sewing time for me! Yeah!!! Thank you for the chance to win.

I don’t think I have found a precut I don’t like, though there are some I haven’t quite figured out what to do with yet. I tend to have lots of ideas that involve jelly rolls and charm packs and try to keep several on hand just in case..
I love precuts!! They’re a no-brainer when it comes to coordinating fabrics for a new quilting project. :)
I love the colors, textures and smells of the fall season. It is so relaxing to me. :)
i struggle with cutting accurately and getting the most out of my yardage, so I love precuts! Not sure I have a favourite, but I have enjoyed using charm packs a fair bit.
This book looks great for improving my skills in small steps; thanks for the opportunity to win it.
I love jelly rolls and charm packs. Sometimes I add some of my own fabrics but not always
My favorite precuts are fat quarters. I like the flexibility of being able to cut whatever size pieces I need.
Thanks for the great giveaway!
Beautiful quilt!! My favourite precut is the Fat Quarter
I like using charm packs, make great D9P baby quilts.
I am in Australia, so we are not going back to school at the moment, in fact it is almost time for 2 weeks holiday (YEAH!!!!), I do however love shopping for school supplies with my boys and deciding how to decorate their books.
I also like that the boys returning to school means I have more sewing time. That’s when I pull out my jelly roll and make a quick quilt so I get a ‘beginning of the year’ quilt fix.
Thanks for offering the giveaway. I like your blog. I will add you to my reader.
Thanks
Debra
I love fall because the weather is cool enough to start taking long hikes again.
I love jelly rolls! Love the quilt that you featured! Now that colder winter is coming this way, there will be more time behind the machine!
My favorite precut is the fat quarter. I like leftover scraps even after making the quilt. It is the fabric hoarder in me.
Thanks for a chance to win this new book.
I love Jelly Rolls, mostly because of the variety of patterns available. Charm packs are a close second.
I love school supplies. I go crazy for them! Thanks for the chance to win!
I always enjoyed the first days of school–new books, new backpack, new notebook and new friends to be made. Now “going to school” is enjoyable by way of quilting/sewing classes. The Layer Cake seems to be my most favorite pre-cut. I have several waiting for various projects. Thanks for the chance in the giveaway.
I love to use Layer Cakes!
I love this time of year because it is nice to get back into a routine (and eventually we get some cooler weather here in Texas.) Honestly, I love all precuts, which I choose depends on the fabric or project I have in mind. I’ve recently discovered how much I like Fat Eighths.
I like FQ Bundles you get a nice amount of the fabric line.
I like FQ Bundles you get a nice amount of all the fabrics in a line..
I go school shopping even though I’ve never had kids, just to see what is new in organizing stuff that I can use at work or in my sewing room. Thanks for the giveaway!
Fat eighths are my usual favorite precut, but I have just completed 2 projects using charm packs and pulled out a jelly roll this morning to start work on Metro Hoops. I guess I love them all! :-)
Charm packs are fun and then fat quarters. Love the quilts in this book, Thanks for the giveaway,
My favorite precut is fat quarters because the tower of fabrics is so inspiring and beautiful. Endless possibilities right there. Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!
Great quilts. And the review was so nice. I like the quilting. I love fat quarters especially bundles…I can stretch them so far!!
Loved your quilt and the fabric you choose. I love fat quarters. Thank you for the inspiration.
I love the pictures my kids post of the grandbabies on the first day of school and then listening to them tell me about school. They’re still young enough to get excited about the first day of school.
My favorite precuts are fat quarters. Because I can sew a small pouch or something out of them and then use for scrap quilts. thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net
I really like jelly rolls because the strips have so much potential!
I think FQ’s are probably my favourite as there is so much flexibility with what you can do with them.
Charms packs! My new obsession. LOVE LOVE LOVE
I love layer cakes! But I do have a junior roll waiting for this book…
Love the way your neutrals look with this pattern and I’m in awe of your doing the quilt in a weekend.
