Moda Love :: Tour & Giveaway!

Hi there! Welcome to my stop on the Moda Love blog tour!

moda-love_header

If you don’t know me yet, my name is Amy Ellis. I’m a new designer for Moda with my first line, Modern Neutrals, shipping next month!

I came to designing fabric by way of my books, Modern Basics, Modern Basics II and Modern Neutrals are available now, and Think Big – will be available in December. More on that one later ;)

Modern Neutrals by Amy Ellis - AmysCreativeSide.com

Since writing Modern Neutrals, I’ve found a devotion to neutral fabrics, and loved selecting clean and clear neutral colors to have my fabric designs printed in. And we popped in a bit of color too – I still love saturated color, and couldn’t resist!

Modern Neutrals Quilts - AmysCreativeSide.com

With the fabric line, I have self-published five quilt patterns, you can find printed patterns and pdf patterns in my shop, along with details about sizes included, and fabric requirements.  Moving on, here’s a few of the questions answered :

When did you start quilting? Tell us about your first quilt.

I taught myself to quilt, shortly after I became a mom. I had learned to sew garments as a girl, but was drawn to quilting later on. I started looking for information and books on quilting everywhere I went. A few years later, our oldest, Gabriella is 14, Emmalie is 10, Sophia is 9 and Owen is 7 – they all have more than enough quilts to snuggle with!

My first quilt, actually had flannel for batting, and was quite small – alternating 9-patches that finished at 3″and the quilt measured 27″ square. I also folded the backing to the front for binding, because I had a hard time visualizing how binding worked. Now, I’m very quick with a binding!

When did you fall in LOVE with quilting/ textiles? and Why?

I fell in love with quilting as I realized how therapeutic it was for me! As a mom with little people around, constantly creating more messes, my seams stayed together, and the results were beautiful. My love of textiles has been a lifelong attraction. My mom is a seamstress too, and fabric was always around the house – thus my learning to sew at the age of 10.

What  is the best part of your design process?

I love it when everything comes together! I had a moment before spring Market, when I realized that I had been involved in the design process from the very beginning, to the very end. I love being involved in the whole process, and seeing my vision realized, in fabric.

I love the color……

Purple. There’s so many nuances!

When I teach classes or workshops, I love…..

Connecting with fellow quilters, and encouraging them to tackle a new project. There’s always a couple of quilters with a big personality to keep the group engaged and having fun!

This project features a layer cake, charm pack or mini charm, but what is your all time favorite moda precut?

My favorite Moda precut is the Layer Cake! There’s so many different ways to use that 10″ of fabric!

—–

For Market, we all made the same pattern with our fabric, and I decided to split my fabrics, warm and cool.  This quilt is so fun to make, and quick – I have been thinking about re-making it in the charm or mini charm version! It would be a great pillow on the couch too!

Modern Neutrals - AmysCreativeSide.com

–>> You can find the free pattern here. Tell me your favorite Moda precut, in the comments and be entered to win a precut or two!

Here’s a tip for trimming your half-square triangles, from me to you :

I’m certain that will get easier :)

I’ll announce giveaway winner(s) on September 13 – Good Luck!

Your quilts, your fabric…just delicious! I especially love the coral and teal with all of the neutrals! Perfect! I used to love FQs the most, until I got into collections…now I have to love charm squares best because they are so affordable.

    Hi Amy,

Lately I’ve been using charm packs to make baby quilts and tote bags. It’s a lot of bang for the buck!

  35. Toni Anne September 3, 2014 at 6:32 am - Reply

It would be easier to say there’s not a pre cut I don’t love. My favorite has to be a big stack of fat quarters. They are useful many different ways, you always have a little left over and they look so nice as inspiration on the shelf. ;->

  47. Kathy September 3, 2014 at 6:55 am - Reply

What a beautiful collection! Love the pop of orange! Thanks for the trimming HST trick; this is such a tedious step, your approach should cut the time in half! Fat quarter bundles are definitely my preferred form of precuts.

  48. Kelly Campbell September 3, 2014 at 6:55 am - Reply

My favorite precut most likely will have to be the jelly roll. If I see a jelly roll in a fabric color that I love, I can’t ever walk right past it. I do a lot of sewing for my etsy store and it always seems like I am using jelly rolls for one thing or another. I also love fat quarter bundles but my favorite has to be the jelly roll.

great fabric line – love working with neutrals. I like to collect entire fabric lines in half yard or fat quarter bundles, but as a precut I think a layercake would be my choice

I’ve been working a lot with strips lately, so I’m not much into jelly rolls at the moment!
I’d love to investigate fat quarters – they seem to have so much potential
There’s nothing quite like a charm pack, though! Add a little solid, or use 2 charm packs and you’ve got a baby quilt.

Fat quarters are my favorite but I’m not sure if they are considered pre-cuts. I like layer cakes because they are convenient to use as they are, but they can also be cut down for variety, and they are large enough for most appliqué pieces.

And it’s versatile too! This is a great pattern. It’s great that Moda outs out projects and patterns to help us use their precuts creatively.

FQ bundles are terrific, but realistically, a layer cake is the next best thing. Great colors in your first line!

Well, I seem to collect charm packs, but never actually use them! The precut I use most often for quilts is a Fat Quarter.

I think my favorite pre-cut has always been the layer cake. Large enough pieces of fabric to make a good sized block — yet not so large as to break the budget. Budget notwithstanding, my favorite cut is a 3-yard piece — I love being able to cut borders on the lengthwise grain (less stretch, no piecing), but I don’t have a big enough budget or a big enough house!
