I stayed up a little bit later than I should have last night, but I really wanted to get this pillow finished up! I’ve had a busy week of computer work, and sometimes sewing late into the night is the perfect way to wake up my creativity. Pretty sure some of you can relate to that!
For this pillow, I had a charm pack of Cosmic Burst, and something small seemed like the best way to let them shine together. Most of the charms where marked, and yielded 8 HST units – yep, they are tiny! 1 1/2″ across, I’ll have to share my method in another post soon.
As much as I typically love things orderly, I had fun laying out the HST units randomly, and watching different patterns emerge. The only spot that I did have a plan, is the perimeter of the pillow.
Since the layout was so random, I decided to not pay attention to the lines in the top, and quilted it with straight lines, with green thread. I marked the center, and began a 1/4″ away from it, then moved my needle over so I could quilt 1/2″ away from each line of quilting while using the edge of my foot as a reference. I also ended up marking the center pivot line so I didn’t miss my mark.
I finished it with a wide binding, and left the excess batting in there to fill it out – I love the way it is framed by the the crosshatch.
I’m on to the next project!
What are you working on?

Wow – great fabric, great design, great workmanship!! I love it!!! OK – ‘fess up – did you plan that perfect little pinwheel? I found a butterfly, too. This pillow just knocked something off the top of my “To-Do” list!
Thanks Becky! Plan the pinwheel? Not really, I just let it happen as I was placing the pieces :) Can’t wait to see your version!
Yes! Staying up late is the secret! Well, I just figured this out a few days ago, daytime is impossible with a four month old. I love the color, the pattern and the quilting. Beautiful pillow!
I love it Amy!!! So fun!!!
There is something to be said for letting a quilt happen.
Looks gorgeous. yeah, nighttime is my only sewing time.
Love it! The white fabric really allows the patterns to pop. I remember seeing the peek of this – really adorable pillow!
And yes my only time to sew with some regularity is 8pm-1am :S
I love your pillow! Staying up late is the only way I can get anything sewing related done, which stinks because I have to be up at 5! That is why I love the weekends and nap times, too.;)
great use of charm squares
What a fun pillow!!! The colors and randomness are wonderful!
I’m in the process of researching for my next big project.
Have a great day!
Always, Queenie
I ADORE that pillow!! I am always sewing into the late hours of night. I get my most creative juices about 2 hrs after everyone goes to bed. Bedtime usually arrives between 1-3am. Product of working night shift many years ago? I have no idea…but I just go with it instead of fighting it!
I love this so much, Amy! First of all, I love HSTs :) I think the random layout is especially effective with the few bigger squares you added. Wonderful!
I love it, all of those tiny HSTs and the quilting is great, I love the direction you went with that. I totally feel you on the computer overload. I machine embroidered random things yesterday and have neglected my blog due to computer overload last week and the weekend. :-)
Love it Amy!
The cushion looks fantastic; I’m surprised, but I love the random layout!
Love this pillow, such wonderful energy. I fist saw it on Pinerest then I was working my way down my blog list and saw it was yours! Great job.
It is beautiful…my table runner is still in pinned pieces all over my cutting table. I started teaching an online course this week and it has sucked up WAY more time than I anticipated.
Beautiful! Too tiny for my patience! Lol
I love it. As for the quilting – did you just stitch the top (one layer of fabric) or did you stitch it to something? I see all these pillows with beautiful quilting and can’t figure it out!
I have been going through you r variuos post and wish to congratulate you on your posts. You truly have a creative gift.
