My kids all want to learn to sew, and so we are on a sewing adventure, and they hope to end up with new quilts handmade at their own hands!  Join us as we sew through the summer each week!  Sewing with Kids — week 1week 2week 3week 4, week 5, and week 6.

This week, Sophia had a big week – she made her quilt top yesterday!  Look at this smile —

Earlier in the summer she had selected a Hoopla Layer Cake, and patiently waited until I gave her the green light to actually make it.  Over the weekend while I was working on my doll quilt, she was hovering; really wanted to be sewing.  So I had her pull out her Layer Cake and match up the pieces that she wanted to put side by side.  She set them in a pile and was happy to let me finish!

To sew this up, I helped add a couple pins so the layers would stay in place, then we talked about chain piecing, and put it into practice!

Sophia has been my helper off and on the last year, as she was home in the afternoons, and would cut apart my chains for me, and offer her insight on fabric decisions.  She’s quite familiar with the process, and was ready for the next step every time I turned around!

We sewed together 7 rows of 6 squares, Sophia decided where each piece would go, and made sure that each piece returned to the right spot after taking the row to the sewing machine.

After sewing the rows I did scan and rework a few seams, just to be certain that it stays together!  Gave her a lesson on using a seam ripper even.  Tomorrow Emmalie plans to make a similar quilt, in fabrics of her own selection, and hopefully we can get some fuzzy fabric soon to finish them both!  I just need to get Ella started on the quilt she selected from my book, and we will be set.

Have you been sewing with the kids in your life?
