My kids all want to learn to sew, and so we are on a sewing adventure, and they hope to end up with new quilts handmade at their own hands!  Join us as we sew through the summer each week!  Sewing with Kids — Week 1, and Week 2.

This week I gave Emmalie a chance to work at the machine, and a few options for what to sew.  She selected a pin cushion, so she can use it in future sewing endeavors – however, we used Lapel Stick today!

We made a simple log cabin block with 2 1/2″ squares/strips for a top.

Some of the process:

I’m right there over her shoulder, encouraging her to step on the gas, and hold the threads.

Making our way around the center fishy square.

Sophia was over Emmalie’s other shoulder, wanting to sew something – desperately!  She made a layer cake pillow to go with her barbie blanket, while Emmalie was stuffing her pincushion.

Adding the back, carefully turning the corners.

She added the stuffing, then I pressed a crease so she could stitch the edge shut.  I just started her off, and finished it with a good knot.  I also added a tuft in the center with the hand quilting thread that she had closed it with.

This was a fun, and quick project!  Emmalie had a blast making it on the machine and she’s looking forward to our next project!

Hmm…what should we make next week?

Hope you are enjoying this set of posts –
