Piles of them! And I have no definite plans yet, just the simple love of hand sewing.
Originally I purchased 1 1/4″ templates, based on my quick twitter research, but as I started cutting scraps, I cut 2″ instead of 3″ squares…so! I decided to buy the 3/4″ templates as well. I had cut a ton of squares already!
Turns out – I like the 3/4″ better! There’s less wiggle room, and they sew up fast!
An example of my basting stitches, just in case you are curious.
These little buggers are addicting! I tend to sew them while waiting in the carpool line at school, or while relaxing in the evenings. The key to being able to enjoy it, is having pieces prepped and ready. After cutting all the squares, I pin them to a template so that they are ready to sew, and stash them in a zip pouch, with my thread, scissor, needle and pin box.
Do you have a favorite organizer for your hexies?
I might be looking for an upgrade soon.
Blessings ~ Amy
I can see you making them into a water fall of colors and sizes out of these…. Very cool color can’t wait to see what you do with them…
that’s how i baste mine too! i don’t like seeing the thread on top. plus, i don’t have to pull out the basting. i’m lazy in that way.
If they’re the small hexies – I organize them by using the boxes for embroidery thread. . .But I haven’t dealt with the biggger hexies.
Yes, I love this plastic organizer (scroll down a few pictuers) that I got at Joann’s. It works really well. Until my 3-year-old grandson decides to do his own “organizing” because he loves these hexies too!

I love hex-ing too! Am working on a major quilt, been two years so far, with at least a year to go before I can begin hand quilting it! My favorite travelling tool is a fabulous little gizmo found here: http://www.welldoneexperience.com/shop/. It was intended for beading but there’s room for my hexagons, thread and snips, and the unfolding “platform” area can hold extra pins and needles and lies neatly on the lap while stitching in the car or elsewhere. I have three of the pouches, which snap out for swapping; I use one for hexes, one for clamshells, and one for crochet. My review is here: http://grendelskin.blogspot.com/2009/11/product-plug-travelling-handwork.html
I want to learn to do these. What do I need? I am away from home and don’t have my sewing machine or anything for that matter. I’d love to have a little hand sewing to do.
How fun to see these this morning! I love the 3/4″ size, too, and hexies are for sure addictive. Ziplock baggies in various sizes have worked just fine for me. Now that I have quite a pile, the various baggies and finished “flowers” are all in a plastic bin beside the couch, where I sew during TV time. (This morning they are all on my kitchen counter, waiting for the sun to come out so I can take pics of how far along I am one year in.)
I keep thinking that hexies are not for me..that I don’t have the patience or time…but they keep coming back…and I have all these scraps, etc….I may have to cave in and try.
I just posted about mine Monday. I work out of a show box and store the hexies (i have about 1000) in a Costco spinach container. It works great. I basted them that way too. I pull out the centers of my flowers as I go. I’ll pull out the strings just before I sandwich the quilt.
Uh… meant to say shoebox! :)
I started making them when my sewing machine took a vacation. (Went to the shop,) Then I joined One Flower Wednesday — which is a lot of fun. Hexis are definately a good take-along project and very addicting. As a new quilter I liked hearing that it takes seasoned quilters years to finish a quilt– because then I don’t feel alone.
Thanks for sharing, I’ve yet to make my first hexie but I’m excited to get started! Where did you get your templates?
Hi! I use a large IKEA box found in the kid’s section and have been building up there. Oops, ran out of room so went on to a floss box. My hexies are 7/8″! I use a small IKEA box to keep my 10 threaded needles (coolest notion!), my threader, scissors, lavendar pom pom from my sister in the summer in the States and any hexies I am working on. I blogged here:
http://coffeebeansdailies.blogspot.com/2011/03/hexagon-progress-february-2011.html
I don’t have a picture on my blog of the small box that I actually take around. I can get it to you if you would like!? Oh, I have 1,142 in these two boxes!
I use a plastic pencil box to store my pieces, scissors, thread & needle. Have you seen the printable graph paper at http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/hexagonal/ I print these out on cardstock and cut them out myself. A little time consuming, but I didn’t have to wait for shipping ;) Yours look great!
I just learned to paper piece hexies about a month ago. I like to work on them while waiting for my son at his gym class. I have my finished hexies and supplies all in a $1 plastic pencil case that I got at Target. I think I have about 10 finished hexies right now, so it’ll be a while before I can make them into anything. :)
For my 1 inch hexies, I have 3 sets of bags. Multiples of baggies for the unbasted hexies all sorted by color, 1 for the hexie card papers that I cut myself, and very small baggies (alcohol wipe size) for the “take with me” wip. Once the hexies are basted, or sewn in pairs or triplets, they are stored in a small baby wipes container. Everything goes on one section of a bookcase shelf, nice and neat and easy to find (and not lose as I tend to do). I’m eyeing a large (empty) baby wipes container for storing the flowers as they are made.
I love your hexies, Amy – I work on mine when we go out on the boat in the summer – there’s nothing quite like sitting on the lake soaking up the sun and stitching hexies! I just keep mine in a ziploc bag – it works great….
By the way, the copy of Modern Basics that I won last week arrived today – and I am so excited! I don’t think I knew it was going to be signed, so that was just a little extra surprise – I can’t stop smiling! Plus as I looked at the quilts, I realized that lots of the designs will be perfect for our quilt ministry – simple yet interesting looking! Thanks again, so much!!
They look so lovely. I don’t get hexies, I can’t understand how you make them! Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.
Love the hexies…
hugzzz
I love the fact you can sew these up just sittin’ around! Tell what you have done with these little hexies. I think I might like them.
I love making them! My 8 year old picks the fabric squares and I turn them into hexies! I store all my supplies in a double sided plastic storage bin (it’s small, perfect to tote around) that I got at Joann’s.
They’re fun, huh? Yours look great. :)
Someone please tell me why I would make all these? They are like yo yos? Addicting? thanks for sharing, Honey, Mom
There is such relaxation in hand sewing!:)
Have you cut out 100 hexagons out of paper? Or just a couple?
