Featuring Kelly — A Bloggers’ Quilt Festival Quilter!

Today’s featured quilter is Kelly at Pinkadot Quilts!  I hope you enjoy getting to know Kelly better –
1. When did you begin quilting?

I began quilting in 1976 when I was pregnant with my first son. The fabrics were horrible and it seemed like you could only find very small prints or solids. Wow have we come a long way! The very first quilt I made was a Grandmother’s Fower Garden it was entirely hand pieced out of solids. At some point during a move, I threw it out! I wish now I had saved it.

2. Why do you quilt?

At 4 years old my great grandmother taught me to embroider, the fire was lit! My friends I and sewed in the 70’s because it was the only way to get some “cool” clothes. When it became “uncool” to sew in the 80’s I was still sewing away, the clothes now replaced by curtains, dolls for my daughter and finally quilts.  I quilt because it is a wonderful creative outlet and has given me the opportunity to make some wonderful friends. I could not sew this summer for about 4 months and it felt like 4 years!

3. What was your most recent fabric purchase?

My most recent fabric purchase was a jelly roll of Kate Spain’s Central Park. I used to be a reproduction girl but have completely changed to brights and a more contemporary vibe. I really love color!

4. What is your favorite quilting tip?

My friend Suzanne gave me this one, if you put a very fine bead of Fray Check along the edge of your applique block it will not ravel as you are sewing. When you square it up the Fray Check is cut off.

5. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festivalquilt?

This quilt started out as a challenge. The challenge had to include a bird, the rest was up to me. Years ago we bought blue bird houses from the boy scouts. Ever since then we have had blue birds in the yard.   As usual I waited until the last minute to start it but in the long run it turned out to be a good thing. I just cut and pasted my design and it evolved, it was a lot of fun to make. Most of the fabrics are hand dyed.

6. Do you sew other things?

I do sew small things, I just recently made some pot holders that I love but am giving away. I seem to be drawn to kitcheny things, table runners, pot holders, towels and thing like that. I also like sewing  things, pin cushions and  needle holders.

7. Anything else you would like us to know about you?

I am a new blogger. I started in September to help pass the time as I recovered from an injury. This is a wonderful community! I have met some very nice people and have been inspired almost every day. It’s also nice to know other people out there like and appreciate the things you make!

Thanks for sharing Kelly!  I have used fray check in garments for years, but never thought about it in quilts.  Perfect application!!

Have a great weekend,
