Hi friends! I was working on a different project yesterday, and realized that some of my favorite posts are the ones that I asked a question, and you answered! So I decided it’s time for another question.
As a quilter or sewist, is there something that you would like to better learn, or gain confidence in?
Personally, I would love to be more confident with applique. I’ve done a bit of applique, but tend to put it off as long as possible. I always admire these quilts –
when I see them on flickr (click the pic to see credits), or at quilt shows. I would love to make one, just need to take on a long term applique project! I don’t even have the book yet…Aunt Millie’s Garden I guess I should move it up the list!
Honestly, I want to know! What would you like to know better? Garments, paper piecing, precision piecing, bags, free-motion quilting….the list goes on.
Let me know~
Amy
I love hand applique. I would love to know paper piecing better I just kinda wing it. I also am looking forward to learning free motion quilting with the quilt along.
I would love to learn free motion quilting, but I can’t seem to find a class anywhere near me for beginners. I follow Leah Day’s 365 Days of Free Motion Quilting blog and absolutely love the designs she comes up with!
I would like to learn free motion quilting better. I have taken a beginner course it it and dabbled some on my own but I just can’t seem to get the hang of it. Local stores only offer beginning classes. I know the theory, I just need some practice and some guidence.
Thread painting would be cool too!
I want to learn how to do needle turn applique. I have all these applique blocks from a block of the month club at the local quilt shop, but I have no idea how to put them together.
I’m doing free motion quilting, but I would like to be better at it and I know it takes practice, so I have to be patient!
Garments and hand quilting. I don’t have the patience for the former and am too busy/lazy for the latter.
I am with a lot of the others and would like to feel more comfortable doing free motion quilting. I would also like to have the confidence to try some designing instead of always following a pattern.
Free motion quilting for sure!!! I have 3 quilt tops that will soon be ready to quilt and would love to try to do them myself (yikes!!!). There are LOTS of other things I would love to learn more about though since I am farely new to this (2 years) and I am self taught (thank goodness for all of you wonderful bloggers!!!). Maybe one day I will find time to take a class or two. Have a happy day!
I’d like to learn how to hand quilt vs. machine quilt. I would also like to learn how to applique properly, and get more confidence in my paper piecing.
I would love to be able to pick out fabric color combos that really worked well together. I can always use 1 color line, but I see fabrics that others have put together from various lines and love the look they have achieved.
I would say hand applique as well. I see such beautiful work where every curve is perfect, and I’d love to get to the point where the rounded edges on mine are nice and smooth. :)
I would love to learn more on applique. I think to learn free motion quilting I would need to take a class and have hands on instruction. I have done some qpplique myself but not this detailed. The applique I did was on Amy Butler’s Hexie Sexy Quilt. I loved it!! It was so calming for me to sit and work on it at night. I may be in the minority here but I would so love to do applique on something like what you posted, but at this point I am not sure how.
I too would love to learn to applique! I’m so new to the quilting world that I don’t know a whole lot, but love to look at applique and wish that I could learn to make my own beautiful quilts too!
Free Motion Quilting for sure! I can do straight lines just fine, but the concept of just roaming around free is scary! I am not even sure my machine can do it, so that may be the first problem!
I would love to learn to applique. I have NO idea how but the things that people make that involve it are amazing. I guess its on my TO DO list someday, but it scares the heck out of me to learn!!
I would love to be better & more confident at free machine quilting. I tend to stick with lines & ditch quilting, need to practice.. practice.. practice.
How to break out of my comfort zone and do my own modern designs. (No pattern – scary!) Also, I agree – I’m always intimidated by applique, no matter how many times I attempt it and it turns out okay. It just seems like there’s so many choices in how to do it well.
For me its garment sewing, to the extent that I am planning to buy a serger (that may have to wait since I plan to purchase the GO! cutter first).
I’m so glad to see that I’m not the only one who needs more work on the free motion quilting. I’m not even sure that I have the foot on right or the tension is off…a big frustrated and not much time to “play” so I put it all away to work on easy stuff.
Another vote for free motion quilting. I do it but my technique could be so much better.
I’d really like to become confident in paper piecing!
There are a couple of things that I would like to learn more about, one is free motion quilting, I am very much a straight line kind of girl, and willy nilly patterns seem to scare me. and the other is Applique, yesterday, i was at my LFS and signed up for 2 applique classes and by the end of them i should know how to applique, the two teachers that I am to learn from though don’t applique by free motion, so i will learn the traditional way of applique. one is in october, and the other is in november
I have been struggling with bowed sashing strips. I’m following all the basic recommendations. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m barring down too hard on my rotary cutter. Thoughts?
Free motion quilting. I’d really, really love to use a long arm machine someday. But for now, I’ll have to be content with a regular old sewing machine!
I would love to learn more about free motion quilting. I mean, I know how to do it, and have taken some great classes, but my confidence is just not up there yet, so I still have trouble breaking out of the stipple.
I love the Aunt Millie quilt. It’s on my “list” too. :)
Amy, I am with you. My applique skills need improvement. But I also probably need a new sewing machine and my applique would improve immediately! I can’t afford one right now but maybe in a few months, I will be able to! Any suggestions!?
I agree with the free motion quilting and definately the applique! I would also like to learn more about sewing with knits.
Absolutely free motion quilting – it’s why I joined the quilt-along – so much faster than plodding along with my walking foot, and I love the effects!
Free motion quilting for sure! I don’t want to mess up a quilt after putting in the time and effort to piece it so I am hesitant to try. I know it takes practice and more practice. I have tried it on some practice squares, but it is still scary to me. Also I would love to have the confidence to choose my own fabrics rather than just using one line or using kits.
I would like to have more know-how and confidence doing free motion quilting.
As for questions, I’m glad you asked. If you like these kinds of conversations, hop on over to my blog on Fridays for “Fun Fact Friday Freebie” where I ask a similar question each Friday. Hm. Not sure what happened, but my comment didn’t post. I didn’t see any messages about it either, so I apologize if I’m posting twice.
As I was saying . . . I’d like to be better at free motion quilting. I’d like to be able to do a better job, but I’d also like to have more confidence.

I would love to gain confidence in practically everything! I’m self taught using books and magazines. I’m doing okay; but, I worry about my creativity. In other words, I worry about the colors going together and looking right.
It’s all so much to take in! I would like to learn how to free motion quilt. I tried it once and discovered I did it wrong. Ha! I will try again soon someday.
joined a free motion quilt along and very excited to improve my ability to do that–find it totally fascinating what people can do/have done on just a sewing machine. am tackling two applique projects right now. using wonder under for one and the other is using light pellon sewn on then turned–not sure what that’s called. have done a bit of both in the past, but not a whole quilt. those examples of applique are stunning!!
I would love lessons on silk ribbon embroidery, stumpwork, and other forms of embroidery to use those skills in my crazy quilting. I started crazy quilting about a year and a half ago and although I have grown by leaps and bounds, I have a long way to go to be up there on the porch with the professionals! :)
I like true applique., but I detest thin raw edge stuff people are doing. Its alot of time and money put it to something that doesn’t last long term. raw edge is just that raw edge and will fray out eventually in my experince. Rw edge is great for art work and wall hangings that don’t get washed. Applique can bo beautiful, it is very time consuming though. In my experience if you have hand issues they’ll pop up and let you know with all the hand work. But it can be so worth it. Have fun learning.
I am tryhing to improve my free motion quilting. I’d love to take a lesson or two but none have been available to me. I’ve read lots but I think a ‘hand’s on’ lesson would make a difference.
stippling. I feel like I have the free motion thing down but the whole “stippling” thing is still foreign to me. They just look like amoebas. :)
I am wanting to learn paper piecing and making little hexagons. I’ve learned a lot from you in the two quilts I made with with you so I’m sure whatever you’re teaching …. I’m learning!!
I’ve recently learned to machine quilt, and I would love much more practice on this. I’d love to try longarm quilting VS using my trust Janome sewist for the task! I also want to do more paper piecing…and try doing some of my own design work. Also…would love to try some “blanketeering” for Project Linus (creating quilts for kids in hospitals or homes)…would be good practice for the machine quilting and design work!
I would love to learn more free motion quilting. I seem to avoid it when finishing my quilts and I know my projects could be so much better!
So many things! I’m new to quilting, after taking a beginner’s class at my LQS. Unfortunately, the class brings with it a lot of hand-holding and was only on a 35″ baby quilt, so things like piecing the backing, borders, etc, were never covered.
I’d love to learn:
free-motion quilting
more accurate cutting (I get bowing, too)
lining up seams better (my corners aren’t always lined up well)
…so much more!…
That’s a long list! I’m getting a bit better at appliqué, but I’m dying to start an appliqué project. I’ve mostly just been practicing on scraps. I also really want to learn to hand quilt.
I have trouble with triangles! Sewing those little things side by side is truly difficult and I end up with a very crooked line of triangles! What could I be doibg wrong? I have looked on the net, but can’t find a tutorial. HELP!
I’ve always wanted to move on to a more difficult quilt, maybe a watercolor quilt, but I can’t get up the nerve. I tend to work on projects within my comfort zone. Maybe someday I will feel I’m ready for the challenge of a more difficult quilt.
Probably applique or paper piecing. I’m awful at applique and for some reason I really don’t enjoy the process of paper piecing even though it leads to such precise and perfect results, typically.
Thanks for including my little quilt Amy! Made my day!
