I have an amazing memoir to share with you  today!  I am honored to be included in the book tour hosted by TLC Book Tours for Amy Boesky.

First, here’s a little bit about the book:

What We Have: A Family’s Inspiring Story About Love, Loss, and Survival
At thirty-two, Amy felt her life was finally coming together—the right man, the right job. A new baby. She’d been racing to fit everything in fast, knowing her family’s risk of hereditary ovarian cancer was looming ever closer. What she didn’t know was that this risk turned out to be more complex and far-reaching than she or her sisters had understood. Now, as her family learned about BRCA1, the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place. But what choices would she have to make in order to choose life?

This special memoir, reads like a novel.  I had to stop and remind myself a couple of times that this is Amy’s (the author) reality.  In the book she shares her deep fears, anxieties, the love that surrounds her in her family relationships.  The joys and the sorrows equally.

The ladies in Amy’s family have all passed away from ovarian cancer in their early 40’s.  Growing up with this knowledge, Amy and her sisters have had a dark cloud of certainty about cancer and the best course of action for living past 45.  Living to see their families grow and become adults.  Living to see their daughters be free of the same dark cloud.  This book isn’t exactly easy to read, in the sense that it’s real, there’s loss and grief too.  However, reading how the family draws together in these times is inspiring and heart-warming.

This book is a transformative couple of years in Amy’s life, even though it feels as though it should be 10!  Her first months as a new mom, and the normal anxieties and foibles, are shared poetically and with a dose of humor, in such a way that you can relate.  And the decision process of buying a new home for the family, it seems to drag on forever, just like it might for you or I!

I loved this book.  It’s so well written, it drew me in from the first few pages.  I would highly recommend it to anyone that loves memoirs, or novels alike!  The relationship between Amy and her husband, Jacques is fun to read about – they are complete opposites, yet truly each others soul-mates.  The balance they find is so necessary for the decisions needed to be made throughout the book – and forward, I imagine.
