Hi there! How was your weekend? We had a quiet family weekend, which was perfect after the last week of travel, and getting readjusted to life at home again. I’m thinking about school starting again and working out schedules for me and the kids! Two and a half weeks before we start back up again – sniff, sniff – I’ve really enjoyed our relaxed summer.
Anyway
This is our last week of blocks! I’m so excited to see these quilts come together – I hope you are too!
Our first block this week is a classic star – Aunt Eliza’s Star:
Here’s what you need:
In white/solid –
4 – 4 1/2″ squares
2 – 5 1/2″ squares
In print –
1 – 4 1/2″ square
2 – 5 1/2″ squares
Set aside the smaller squares for a few minutes, we are making hourglass blocks. Draw your diagonal, sew on both sides – just like we’ve been doing for weeks now, you’re a pro!
Cut on the drawn line, then the opposite diagonal again. Press your pieces and sew hourglass blocks.
Your center mark for trimming is 2 1/4″, trim all four then lay out in block formation with the pieces you set aside earlier.
Sew your rows together.
Sew the rows into a complete block!
Last block is Mosaic Number 22:
Pretty, right? I love this one.
Here’s what you need:
8 – 4″ squares from both a solid, and print.
Get your HST groove on! I hope these are coming pretty easy for most of you now.
Press and trim HST’s to 3 1/2″, then layout in block formation. This one can be tricky!
Sew your rows together.
Sew your rows together to complete your block!
Here’s all my blocks together –
I just noticed my last block in the corner, is sideways…oh, well! I’m loving how these all look together. A few of you have mentioned that your blocks vary in size a bit. My general rule of thumb is if it’s within a quarter of an inch, I make it work. Fabric is very forgiving! Press your blocks nice and flat, then measure each one. Maybe write down each size so that you can keep track, or stack in piles of same size. If your smallest block is 12″, you can either add to it to make it 12 1/2″ or just trim ALL of your blocks to 12″ so that they are easy to work with.
I have a 12 1/2″ ruler that makes all of this simple, using 2 rulers that add up to 12″, 12 1/4″ or 12 1/2″ to carefully measure and trim. Please, please be sure to press your blocks prior to trimming! I don’t want you to mess any of your hard work up!
**After you make your blocks, post about them on your blog (or flickr), then post a link. Please post a permalink, do this by clicking on the title of your post, and copy that url, then paste it in the linky. Thanks!
De-lurking to say that you’re psychic! I spent yesterday trying to make Eliza’s Star to no avail. I was using some fabric I cut earlier. Needless to say it went to the scrap bag.
Now I have your tutorial to go by… and I CAN do it! Thanks for posting this just when I needed it!
I love love love that star block! And that mosaic block is pretty cool too. Can’t wait to get caught up with this sampler. Your blocks all together look so fabulous! Well done, Amy!
Amy – is there somewhere that I can go to copy directions on all the blocks so I have the set? My printer ended up empty and I lost several of them so thought I’d email you to see if there was a way to just print them all off at once. I’d really like to do this as a winter project or maybe some separate pillow projects. Thanks much. Deb Evert in Nebraska
Amy, will there be a post next week with sashing instructions, or are we on our own now? If we are on our own, I need to get to a friend of mine before she freaks out…… We’ll just sash ours at the same time so I can teach her how.
I finished up my blocks today, and I love Aunt Eliza’s star. I had some problems with the mosaic and did some unstitching to make the seams match up, but it looks pretty.
Amy, thanks again for doing this. I have discovered some blocks that I truly love and want to use again. I have already made a lapquilt top using the 6 grid chain. And I look forward to seeing everyone else’s quilt tops. The fabric choices everyone made are so different and beautiful.
I guess this means we are done doing the blocks. :( I have learned a lot. I have found some blocks I love. Will you be having one more week for the sashing or are we on our own now? I can’t wait to get it finished.
Ok, I’d just had to get on and say, “I am caught up and and complete!” Hopefully tomorrow I will be able up load my photos tomorrow night.
The last couple block were tricky, but I’m happy with them. however several of my block for whatever reason or not the same size. HMM? Oh well I’ll fix it later.
I am finally finished this weeks blocks, its been a busy week here as we try to hire a couple of more people so that we can ultimately take more time off, yeah me! Thanks for a great quilt along, I am looking forward to getting this all sashed and put together!

I just realized that I forgot to post yesterday that my blocks are done! This was a really fun week, and I finished four bonus blocks for extra practice on the blocks I didn’t do so well at the first time. Hoping to learn a lot about sashing next :) Thank you so much!

Amy,
I am so sorry that I am late in getting my blocks finished I have not been late a single time and this week I let you all down, I am sorry BUT I did get them done tonight!
The last 2 blocks I really took my time and used what I had learn all these weeks and it paid off they are PERFECT!!! The corners all match I am so proud of my work!! My sashing is all cut and my 25 little blocks too(thanks to my hubby for helping me cut them)!
I can’t wait to get starting on it tomorrow. Thanks…Lucy
To make a long story short, I finished the blocks of one of my two quilts, and need only the last two to finish the other one. But I am going to work on the sashing during what is left of this week and will let you know how far along I have gotten.
I finished my blocks! Yay!
Thanks for doing this Amy, it has been fun, now I just need to finish putting it together, we’ll see how long it takes me to get around to doing that :)
I still have to make last week’s blocks (vacation). For some reason, I like the last block on it’s side better than right side up.

Hugs and have a great week!

Great blocks this week! I am coming home early tonight to get these done. I cant wait but at the same time I’m sad this is our last week of blocks!
Thanks for the tips on cutting, I think all of mine are roughly the same size but its really helpful the way you have explained it!
Your blocks look great all together!

I love this quilt! I so miss quilting! Following you helps. Thanks!
I’m all finished! I like the mosaic block a lot and enjoyed putting the star block together because of the traditonalism of it.
AMY : LOVE your blocks !!!!!!!!!! haven’t started this weeks yet ; can’t decide what fabrics !

Thanks for the questions Sarah! I will have sashing instructions for everyone next week – don’t want to leave anyone hanging!
This is going to be a gorgeous quilt Amy!
